US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from participating in women's sports and asking the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to adjust related regulations.

"From now on, women's sports will be for women only. With this executive order, the war against women's sports is over," AFP quoted President Trump as saying at a signing ceremony at the White House, attended by dozens of children and female athletes.

The order, titled "No Men in Women's Sports," will govern how the federal government applies Title IX, a civil rights law that aims to prevent sex discrimination in federally funded education , including sports, according to AP.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said they would seek "immediate enforcement action" and were ready to sanction schools and sports associations that do not accept gender-separated competitions and gender-separated locker rooms.

"We will protect the proud tradition of female athletes. We will not allow men in women's sports to dominate, injure, and deceive women and girls," Mr. Trump emphasized.

US President Donald Trump signs an executive order banning transgender athletes from participating in women's sports at the White House in Washington on February 5, 2025.

Mr Trump said he would urge the IOC to change its rules on transgender athletes before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He also instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to "make it clear" to the IOC that "we want them to change everything related to the Olympics and this completely ridiculous topic".

However, some experts say that changing the interpretation of Title IX could lead to lengthy legal disputes. According to AP, some organizations and individuals have announced their readiness to sue the Trump administration to protect the rights of transgender athletes, while questioning the legality of this decree.

The decision comes amid years of debate over transgender athletes participating in women's sports, and is part of a broader Trump administration overhaul of transgender rights protections.

Previously, in his inaugural speech on January 20, Mr. Trump announced that the US government 's policy would only recognize two genders, male and female, ending the third gender option. A few days later, Mr. Trump signed an executive order to eliminate "transgender ideology" in the military and ban transgender people from joining the military. The US leader also issued an order restricting gender reassignment procedures for people under 19 years old.
