On July 22nd, the Quang Ngai Provincial Department of Health held a meeting with hospitals and relevant units regarding the two cases that tested positive for pertussis via PCR testing and the work on disease prevention and control.
Accordingly, two cases of whooping cough have been recorded in Quang Ngai City: PTT (over 2 months old, residing in Group 3, Quang Phu Ward) and D.GP (5 months old, residing in Group 1, Tran Phu Ward). PTT has not been vaccinated against whooping cough, while D.GP has received one dose of the DPT-VGB-HIL “5 in 1” vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, and pneumonia/meningitis caused by Hib bacteria.
According to epidemiological investigations, in early July, these children all exhibited symptoms of severe coughing, so their families took them to the Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for treatment. Subsequently, their families transferred them to the Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Suspecting whooping cough, the hospital took samples for testing. On July 16th, the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang announced that both children, PTT and Đ.GP, tested positive for whooping cough via PCR.
Immediately after receiving a positive pertussis test result, the Quang Ngai City Health Center conducted a review and identified 7 people who had close contact with patient PTT and 17 people who had close contact with patient D.GP. Currently, all cases are asymptomatic and are being given prophylactic antibiotics and monitored for their health.
On the morning of July 22nd, the Department of Health held a meeting with hospitals, health centers, and related units to implement measures to prevent and control whooping cough.
According to Dr. Phan Minh Dan, Deputy Director of the Quang Ngai Provincial Department of Health, whooping cough has only reappeared in Quang Ngai since 2020. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, other respiratory illnesses such as measles, diphtheria, and whooping cough have also emerged. Furthermore, the vaccine supply has not met the province's needs, leading to the potential for outbreaks of these diseases locally.
Whooping cough is an acute respiratory infection, commonly occurring in young children, and is easily transmitted through the respiratory tract. At the meeting, the Deputy Director of the Quang Ngai Provincial Department of Health requested the Provincial Center for Disease Control, the Quang Ngai City Health Center, and the ward health stations to continue monitoring and reviewing related cases. For the Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, during the care of pediatric patients, utmost attention should be paid to vaccination and the implementation of the "four on-site" epidemic prevention and control measures, including on-site personnel, on-site command, on-site equipment, and on-site logistics.
Local authorities are aggressively implementing measures to prevent and control whooping cough, providing training on disease prevention and control, and promptly detecting early cases and suspected cases for isolation, treatment, and preventive care. They are also implementing timely and proper containment and treatment of outbreaks to control the spread of the disease in the community.
