
The nursing system at the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital was formed very early, from the period when no hospital in Vietnam had a nursing organization system to direct patient care in the hospital. Specifically, the Nursing Board model was deployed as soon as the hospital came into operation (Decision No. 57/QD-BYT dated January 24, 1981 of the Minister of Health ). In 1983, with the help of Swedish experts, the hospital's Nursing Board was established, under the Medical Affairs Department, with the task of organizing, operating, and supervising patient care in the hospital.
By 1985, the Ministry of Health allowed the hospital to establish a Nursing Department under the Board of Directors, one of two units nationwide to pilot a model of managing care work according to a vertical system, from the head of the Nursing Department, head nurses of the block to head nurses of the department and nurses. Since 1990, the model has been replicated nationwide. The Nursing Department of the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has also continuously grown in all aspects, from professional work, training, scientific research, to implementing technical innovation initiatives...
The Nursing Department of Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is a pioneer in applying the "Comprehensive Team Care Model" in a creative way, suitable to local practice. The model has approached the perspective of comprehensive patient care, contributing to shortening treatment days, reducing costs, bringing satisfaction to patients and their relatives (annual survey results show that over 90% of patients and relatives are satisfied). Over the past 10 years, the unit has supported the transfer of this model to 22 hospitals and medical centers in the Northern region; at the same time, it has welcomed 90 delegations with thousands of officials including hospital leaders, department leaders and hospital head nurses, department head nurses from provinces and cities across the country to visit and study.

Strengthening management and improving the quality of comprehensive patient care is one of the top goals of the Nursing Department of Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. Over the past years, the unit has continuously built 10 indicators of care quality, monitored and analyzed trends... to serve as a basis for developing plans and proposing intervention measures to improve the quality of professional work. Every year, the department has conducted more than 20 inspections and supervisions to detect existing problems and propose timely corrective measures. Every month, the department has organized inspections and evaluations of the implementation of procedures and regulations for updating and editing. Especially, it always focuses on checking, supervising and urging the implementation of hygiene procedures, preventing hospital infections, implementing 5S, cleaning the environment to contribute to maintaining a "green, clean, beautiful" hospital... Along with that, it is important to pay attention to the training of staff; Use human resources and medical equipment systems and systems in an optimal, economical and safe manner.
To improve the quality of patient care, staff of the Nursing Department of Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has actively implemented research topics, or participated in research in the field of patient care and service, applying innovations and technical improvements. Statistics from 2012 to present, the staff at the unit have participated in implementing a total of 22 topics and initiatives. Typical examples include: "Improving the form for recording medical orders and monitoring care applied in the Emergency Department", "Improving the means to support the transportation of patients from bed to stretcher and vice versa", "Improving the mobile oxygen tank holder to be transported with the patient", "Raising the warning level for patients with allergies"...
From 2012 to present, the Nursing Department has always achieved the title of excellent labor collective, received the Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Health 4 times, received the Second Class Labor Medal in 2011 and the First Class Labor Medal in 2025.
Nursing is one of the professions in the health care system. Nurses are the ones who, together with doctors, diagnose, treat, and care for the physical and mental health of patients. Resolution of the 16th Provincial Party Congress, term 2025-2030 sets the target: Achieving 68 hospital beds/10,000 people (including 65 public beds/10,000 people and 3 private beds/10,000 people); 19 doctors/10,000 people; 8 university pharmacists/10,000 people; 33 nurses/10,000 people; the rate of population participating in health insurance reaches 100%. |
