Women of Cua Nam Ward: Creating momentum for sustainable poverty reduction.

Although there are no longer any impoverished households, Cua Nam ward (Hanoi) continues to implement social welfare policies that ensure both immediate and long-term security, linked to the goal of sustainable development. In this, the Women's Union of the ward plays a core role in implementing social welfare policies through many humane models.

Spreading humane models

Over the years, the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward (formerly the Women's Union of Hoan Kiem District) has implemented many focused and targeted activities, closely adhering to the practical needs of women and children in the area. The models developed are not only aimed at providing immediate support but also at long-term solutions, creating sustainable changes in the socio -economic lives of its members. A highlight of the Union's operational methods is its proactive and creative spirit, its people-centered approach, and its emphasis on women's role in building families, communities, and economic development.

According to Pham Hai Anh, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward, among the programs implemented, the "Godmother" model is a particularly bright spot, clearly demonstrating the Union's social responsibility towards children in difficult circumstances. Currently, the Union is directly supporting four children with special circumstances, each receiving 1 million VND per month. This is not only financial support to help them stabilize their lives and ensure they have the opportunity to attend school, but more importantly, it represents the companionship and encouragement from the "mothers" in the program.

What sets the model in Cua Nam ward apart is the combination of material support and emotional care. The "godmothers" regularly visit, share, listen, and guide the children. This creates a warm environment, helping children gain motivation to overcome difficulties and nurture their aspirations for success in their studies and lives. With its systematic and thoughtful approach, the "Godmother" model in Cua Nam is considered one of the most effective models, widely spreading its humanitarian values within the community.

Recognizing that economic stability is key to women escaping poverty and building stable lives, the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward has shifted its focus from direct support to livelihood support. Empowering women through business startups, developing household economic models, and connecting them with jobs has contributed to creating sustainable, long-term value for its members.

Over the past period, the Association has supported three women in starting their own businesses. For each case, the Association not only provided advice on business models, guided procedures, and connected them to markets, but also accompanied them through the initial stages of business – the most challenging period for women starting out. These small business models have initially generated stable income, helping women become more confident in life and develop their potential.

In addition, the Association has supported 20 women in increasing their income through household economic development programs. The support focuses on guiding them in building small business models suitable for urban conditions, optimizing family resources, and applying sales methods appropriate to the market. As a result, many women have improved their living standards, contributing to a better quality of life for their families.

In particular, the Association's job placement activities achieved outstanding results, with 100 women being connected to stable jobs. This is a commendable effort, especially in the context where unskilled and vulnerable women still face many difficulties in finding suitable employment.

Promoting household economic development

One of the clearest examples of the organizational capacity of the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward is its effective management of preferential loan funds from the Social Policy Bank. According to Pham Hai Anh, President of the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward, with a total outstanding loan balance of over 10 billion VND through 6 savings and loan groups, the Union has supported 156 households with loans for the intended purpose, promptly and effectively.

The association strictly implements the process of reviewing, monitoring, and supporting borrowers, ensuring that funds are used for the right beneficiaries and yield practical results. Many households, especially women who are the primary breadwinners, have been able to invest in expanding small-scale production, business, and services, gradually escaping poverty and increasing their income.

Besides welfare and livelihood support activities, the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward also implements the "Exchange Waste for Gifts" model, combining two important goals: environmental protection and fundraising to support disadvantaged people. The model encourages members and residents to sort waste at source and bring recyclable waste to exchange for gifts, thereby helping the Union maintain funding for humanitarian activities.

Notably, the model has created a vibrant community environment, attracting a large number of members to participate. Through the model, 20 member families have met the criteria of "5 no's, 3 clean's," significantly contributing to improving the quality of life and civilized lifestyle in the area.

Pham Hai Anh, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward, also stated that, in addition to models supporting women and children, the Union also promotes humanitarian activities, sharing difficulties with compatriots in Vietnam and international friends. This year, the Union raised 65 million VND to support people affected by floods and storms, and over 30 million VND to support the people of Cuba. This is not only the result of the unity of its members but also a testament to the solidarity and humanity of Vietnamese women in the new era.

Focus on improving livelihoods and expanding support networks for women.

The achievements of the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward are not the result of isolated models, but rather the fruit of a comprehensive system of solutions, organized systematically, scientifically , and closely linked to the practical needs of its members. From caring for social welfare and supporting livelihoods to developing household economies and protecting the environment, these models form a continuous chain of impact, complementing each other and bringing sustainable results.

A distinctive feature of the Association's operational methods is its systematic approach. The models are designed according to a clear series of objectives: addressing urgent needs; creating long-term livelihoods; and building a civilized living environment: developing the "Exchange Waste for Gifts" model and the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" criteria.

This approach helps the Association optimize resources, avoid duplication in implementation, and ensure the sustainability of its activities. Integrating environmental protection with humanitarian work is a creative highlight, demonstrating innovative thinking and suitability to the requirements of a central urban ward.

A key factor contributing to the Association's success is its proactive approach to innovation. Instead of following conventional methods, the Association places people, women, and children at the center of all its plans. Models are developed based on practical surveys, member feedback, and assessments of socio-economic conditions in the area.

From managing loans exceeding 10 billion VND to connecting 100 women with employment opportunities and supporting 20 women in increasing their income, the Association has demonstrated reliable organizational capabilities. This strengthens the trust of its members and creates favorable conditions for expanding activities in the future.

In the coming period, the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward has identified several strategic goals. One of the important directions is to improve the quality of livelihood support and build a community of economically independent women. The Women Entrepreneurs Club of the ward will play a role in providing professional support, connecting markets, sharing management experience, and providing capital support. This will create a dynamic network of women entrepreneurs, ready to support each other's development.

The association also aims to standardize the "Exchange Waste for Gifts" model, making it a distinctive model for the ward in environmental protection. Combining communication, activating a spirit of self-discipline in waste sorting, and mobilizing social participation will help the model spread more widely in the community.

Besides economic development, the Association continues to consider humanitarian work as a central task. Maintaining support for disadvantaged children, sharing difficulties with people nationwide, and strengthening people-to-people diplomacy will contribute to building the image of a compassionate, responsible, and cohesive Cua Nam community.

The achievements of the Women's Union of Cua Nam Ward in recent times are a testament to its proactive, creative, and dedicated work. Through humane and practical models, especially in the field of motivating and supporting women and children to reduce poverty sustainably and develop the economy, the Union has made a significant contribution to improving the quality of community life and building a civilized, progressive, and compassionate Cua Nam Ward.
