In a heated post-North London derby interview, manager Ange Postecoglou appeared to go too far when he promised Tottenham fans they would win a trophy this season.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was unable to keep his cool when confronted by Sky Sports after the defeat to Arsenal. He insisted he had always won trophies in his second season in charge and is confident he will continue that streak this campaign.
That's right, his team 'came second' in the derby as Gabriel's goal gave Arsenal all three points.
Postecoglou was a little curt with the interviewer when he was interrupted while talking about winning the title in his second season. "Shall I answer the question or are you going to continue asking?
"No, definitely not, I will correct myself. I don't usually win. I always win in my second year as coach. Nothing has changed."
"I said it," Postecoglou continued. "I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it."
Fans' reaction
Tottenham fans have reacted with mixed reactions to the Australian coach. Some found Postecoglou's comments funny, while others reminded the coach that he is in charge of Tottenham, a team that has not won a trophy since 2008.
One fan responded on social media: "Tell him this is Tottenham."
Another added: "He won't win anything because he's at Tottenham."
A third wrote: "That's fine when you're in charge at Celtic or in Australia."
And another commented: "I think he has forgotten the club he is managing."
Paul Merson doesn't believe Postecoglou will succeed
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson also disagreed when the Tottenham boss said he would win a trophy this season, joking that he had 'more chance of winning Strictly' than Ange Postecoglou of winning a trophy with Tottenham.
“I like Ange, I like him, but I have a better chance of winning Strictly,” Merson told Sky Sports. Presenter David Jones brazenly revealed that “it’s not good news for Tottenham” after seeing some of Merson’s moves on the BBC dance competition (which pits dancers against celebrities).
Merson said: “If Tottenham get into the top four, that would be great. To be honest, to get into the top four, they need Solanke to score 20 goals, and to get that number of goals, they 100% need to improve their crossing ability. Otherwise, even if you put Haaland in there, you won’t get any goals.”
