(Chinhphu.vn) - In response to the incident of two fishing boats breaking their anchors on Gianh River, causing 9 crew members to go missing on the night of September 28, the Border Guard and the Quang Tri provincial government mobilized maximum forces and means to urgently organize a search along the entire river and coastal route.

According to information from the Border Guard of Quang Tri province, at about 11:30 p.m. on September 28, in the Gianh River area (in Bac Gianh ward), two fishing boats with registration numbers BV-92756 TS and BV-92754 TS owned by Ms. Nguyen Thi Be (born in 1971, residing in Long Hai commune, Ho Chi Minh City) had their anchor ropes broken and drifted freely in strong whirlwind conditions after the circulation of storm No. 10, causing 9 crew members to go missing.

Previously, these two fishing boats had been anchored at the Bac Trach storm shelter since June 2024 and were put on a repair dock at Thang Loi port ( Quang Tri ) since June 2025. On the afternoon of September 28, the boats were re-launched and anchored to avoid the storm on Gianh river. When the storm weakened, 11 crew members boarded the boat for technical inspection and cooking to prepare for a new voyage when they suddenly encountered an accident. Due to the boat's engine not starting, the rising river water combined with strong gusts of wind caused the two boats to lose their anchorage position, were swept away and sank.

Immediately after the incident, four crew members were able to swim to shore and were received by the Border Guard Squadron 1 and given timely medical care. The remaining crew members, including the two captains (often called Mr. Nam and Mr. Tho), are currently uncontactable.

Quang Tri Provincial Border Guards urgently mobilized ship BP-07-12-03/09, motorboat MS-BP-07-15-01/05 and 4 mobile patrol teams with 40 officers and soldiers to search on Gianh River, along the coast and estuary. Local forces were also notified to coordinate support.

On the morning of September 29, the Commander of the Provincial Border Guard and the delegation of the Provincial People's Committee Chairman were present at the scene, directing the synchronous deployment of rescue measures, requesting the functional forces to take advantage of every hour to search for the missing crew members, while ensuring logistics, medical care, and psychological stability for the four lucky survivors.

Search and rescue operations are still being urgently carried out in the complicated weather conditions. The authorities are determined not to let any further human casualties occur, and are closely coordinating with local authorities and the victims’ families to handle the situation.
