This morning, December 1st, over 10,000 athletes flocked to My Dinh National Stadium to participate in the Viettel Marathon, an international race across three Indochina countries. Notably, the race also featured top athletes and former athletes such as Hoang Nguyen Thanh, Nguyen Van Lai, and Nguyen Thi Oanh. Previously, the first leg, held in Luang Prabang, was a great success, with a record 5,000 athletes competing.
Stage 2 of the Viettel Marathon 2024, an international race across three Indochinese countries, in Vietnam attracted more than 10,000 participants.
At the Viettel Marathon Vietnam leg, the pleasant weather further energized the athletes. In addition, the new, relatively straight and wide race course allowed runners to stride comfortably.
In the most anticipated race, the advanced full marathon, both the men's and women's events were extremely exciting. On the 42.194 km course for men, record holder Hoang Nguyen Thanh and his senior teammate Nguyen Van Lai competed fiercely from the very first meters to the finish line at My Dinh Stadium.
Hoang Nguyen Thanh won the 42.195 km race at the Viettel Marathon 2024 international race in Hanoi this morning, December 1st.
Ultimately, Nguyen Thanh overtook his senior teammate at the final stretch to cross the finish line first, becoming the champion of the full marathon distance at the Viettel Marathon Vietnam leg with a time of 2 hours 28 minutes and 21 seconds. Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Lai finished right behind, just one second slower than Nguyen Thanh's time.
Immediately following the dramatic race between Nguyen Thanh and Van Lai, the women's full marathon witnessed a very convincing performance by record holder Nguyen Thi Oanh. Last September, Nguyen Thi Oanh conquered the Techcombank Hanoi International Marathon with a time of 2 hours 44 minutes and 20 seconds despite heavy rain, thereby setting a new national record. Nguyen Thi Oanh broke the previous record of Hoang Ngoc Hoa (2 hours 44 minutes and 52 seconds, set at the Hong Kong International Marathon in early 2024).
Nguyen Thi Oanh made a last-minute U-turn and set a spectacular new record.
And this morning (December 1st), Nguyen Thi Oanh once again surpassed Ngoc Hoa to claim the gold medal at the Viettel Marathon. Oanh finished with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes and 49 seconds, while Ngoc Hoa finished with 2 hours 47 minutes and 42 seconds.
Notably, because she had just competed in the National Athletics Championships in mid-November, Nguyen Thi Oanh initially aimed for the half-marathon. However, at the last minute, Oanh changed her mind and switched to competing in the full marathon, demonstrating the class of a top runner in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
