On March 12th, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that it had met with leaders of several leading specialized and general hospitals in the city regarding the construction of a new Trauma Hospital in the Tan Kien medical cluster (Binh Chanh district).

Experts at the meeting unanimously agreed on the necessity of establishing a Trauma Hospital within the Tan Kien specialized medical cluster.

The leaders of the Department of Health, along with experts, have unanimously recommended that the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City allow the adjustment of the land plot designated YT-5 (2.76 hectares) within the 21-hectare area planned for healthcare, which was intended for Binh Dan Hospital to build its second facility, to be converted into a Trauma Hospital.

The Trauma Hospital model will meet the treatment and care needs of people who unfortunately suffer injuries from various causes. Patients, whether suffering injuries to the head, chest, abdomen, limbs, spine, etc., will all be admitted for emergency care and treatment at this hospital.

The hospital will be structured and invested in human resources, equipment, and technology across various specialties (emergency, anesthesia, resuscitation, multi-specialty surgery, etc.).

The Trauma Hospital will have a capacity of 1,000 beds, reducing the burden of trauma emergency care on general and specialized hospitals within the central medical cluster.

The Department of Health believes this adjustment will not affect the infrastructure development of Binh Dan Hospital. The reason is that the Department of Health has officially proposed to the Department of Planning and Investment to prioritize funding for the hospital to build new buildings to replace the old, dilapidated ones at the current location.

"More importantly, the specialized and general hospitals in the city are ready to share the necessary specialized human resources to ensure the Trauma Hospital operates effectively if the city approves investment in this hospital," the Department of Health emphasized.

According to the Department of Health, if the Trauma Hospital is built with a new facility in the YT-5 area of the Tan Kien specialized medical cluster, it will be located next to important transportation routes of the city leading to the provinces in the Mekong Delta.

In the near future, there will be a new 115 Emergency Center, a new blood bank, and a helipad already built at the City Children's Hospital… all very suitable for emergency operations and trauma treatment interventions.

Once the patient's condition stabilizes, if further specialized treatment is needed, they will be transferred to specialized hospitals for continued treatment.

It is even more significant that the establishment of the Trauma Hospital will address the dilapidated and overcrowded condition of the existing Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, which has been struggling for a very long time due to a lack of investment for reconstruction.

At that time, the entire existing Orthopedic Trauma Hospital will relocate to the new Trauma Hospital facility.

Continue to propose the construction of a new hospital for the existing Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital.

Regarding the current location of the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, the health sector recommends that the city invest in rebuilding the entire hospital to become a truly specialized orthopedic hospital.

The hospital focuses on developing advanced techniques in orthopedics on par with developed countries, and serves as a research and training center for specialized orthopedic medical personnel for the entire region.
