In residential group 7, the area with the largest winter crop area in the commune, the working atmosphere is very urgent. Although traces of the flood still remain, instead of leaving the land bare after the flood, farmers have proactively cut down fallen fruit trees, leveled and cleaned the fields, and switched to growing short-term crops.

Mr. Le Van Ha, Party Cell Secretary, Head of Residential Group 7, Song Ma Commune, said: The alluvial land along the river is fertile, so every year people still maintain vegetable cultivation. This year, many households have converted the fruit trees damaged by floods to grow short-term vegetables. The entire residential group has about 10 hectares, and since September, households have simultaneously planted key vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower... in time to supply the market for Tet.

Because the alluvial soil after flooding is often compacted and susceptible to fungal diseases, households are instructed by staff of the Commune General Service Center to sprinkle lime powder for disinfection, dry the soil and use biological products to treat plant residues before planting, helping to limit pests and diseases for seedlings right from the beginning of the season.

While busily taking care of her vegetable garden of more than 1 hectare, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi, from residential group 7, shared: The flood at the end of July caused heavy damage to my family, nearly 200 longan and apple trees were buried. With the goal of not letting the land rest and ensuring income, my family has converted the entire area to growing vegetables. Currently, the vegetable garden has the following types: cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes and herbs according to safe processes, using organic fertilizers. The products are mainly sold to wholesale markets and local retailers, it is expected that this crop, the family will earn about 50 million VND.

Also suffering damage to about 50 longan trees due to natural disasters, Ms. Le Thi Hoa chose to grow flowers. Ms. Hoa shared: Most people in the area focus on growing vegetables, I decided to convert the area to grow onions and plant 10,000 chrysanthemums, serving the market demand on the full moon, the first day of the lunar month and the Lunar New Year, promising to bring a stable source of income.

To restore production after the flood, farmers in Song Ma commune have converted damaged fruit-growing land to growing short-term crops.

Mr. Hoang Van Thuyen, Chairman of Song Ma Commune People's Committee, said: Focusing on restoring production and growing winter crops to achieve high economic efficiency, the commune has directed the specialized department to closely follow the guidance of the Department of Agriculture and Environment on seed structure and crop time frame. Directing the Commune General Service Center to guide farmers on production processes, measures to prevent cold and frost; encouraging the application of advanced technical advances and economical irrigation.

In addition, the commune has strengthened inspection and strict supervision of the quality of input materials such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. The commune's policy is to expand the winter crop area, create commercial agricultural products, and take advantage of green feed sources for livestock; exploit the land potential to the fullest, gradually changing the practice from two-crop cultivation to intensive cultivation. Up to now, farmers in the whole commune have planted 76 hectares of vegetables and 40 hectares of grass of all kinds. Although the winter vegetable growing area is not too large and concentrated, the diversity of crop varieties has well met the local market demand.
