Farmers in Chieng La are developing an integrated economic model.

After reorganization, Chiềng La commune's territory spans from Chiềng Ngàm, Chiềng La, and Nong Lay communes to Tông Cọ commune in the former Thuận Châu district. Residential areas are located along National Highway 6B and Provincial Highway 116, creating a key transportation hub. In particular, Chiềng La commune has favorable natural conditions for agricultural and fisheries development, enabling farmers to compete in production and strive to overcome poverty.

Visiting the integrated economic model of Mr. Ca Van So and Mrs. Quang Thi Ua's family in Chieng La commune, we found they have 1 hectare of coffee plantation, of which 0.7 hectares are already producing coffee and 0.3 hectares are newly planted. Previously, the family mainly let the coffee plants grow naturally, resulting in unstable yields and poor efficiency. Mrs. Quang Thi Ua said: "Thanks to the attention and support of the local government, my family participated in training courses on coffee planting and care techniques; coffee replanting; and livestock care techniques. After the training, my family applied the correct procedures and techniques, so the coffee plants grew well, yielded high productivity, and ensured clean products. This year, the coffee harvest was good, and the price was also good. The family harvested nearly 6 tons of fresh coffee cherries, and after deducting expenses, earned a profit of nearly 200 million VND."

Besides growing coffee, Mrs. Quàng Thị Ủa's family also has 0.2 hectares of rice paddies, ensuring food security for the family; they also raise 8 cows; and raise goats, chickens, and ducks. The family's livestock and poultry are well cared for and vaccinated, so they thrive. Thanks to this, the family not only has a reliable food supply but also earns tens of millions of dong annually from selling livestock and poultry. With the profits from farming and animal husbandry, Mrs. Ủa's family has purchased some machinery to support production and animal husbandry, such as a plow, a lawn mower, a grass cutter for feeding the cows, and household items. As a result, the family's material and spiritual lives have improved significantly, and their children receive a full education.

The family of Mr. Tong Van Doa in Chieng La commune owns over 2,000 m² of garden land. Previously, they planted oranges and pomelos, allowing the trees to grow naturally, resulting in low economic efficiency and yielding only 10-20 million VND per year. To improve their economic situation, Mr. Doa's family decided to invest in raising rabbits for commercial purposes. However, when the rabbits were ready for sale, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, preventing them from selling the rabbits, and they lost all their invested capital. Undeterred, in 2023, Mr. Doa and his wife decided to improve their economic situation by working as laborers and learning to grow melons in greenhouses in Hai Duong .

Driven by a desire to prosper in their homeland, in July 2024, Mr. and Mrs. Tong Van Doa returned to their village. Using their savings from working as laborers, they borrowed money from relatives and invested over 400 million VND to build a 2,000 m² greenhouse for growing melons. Mr. Doa shared: "While working as laborers, my wife and I learned greenhouse construction techniques; how to care for melons in the greenhouse; how to install a clean water drip irrigation system; and how to use organic fertilizer to ensure the melons meet clean product standards. We started building our 2,000 m² greenhouse for melons using the model I learned and implemented in Hai Duong. The owner of the previous farm where I worked also regularly called and provided guidance, and recently even came to the farm to offer additional technical support. As a result, our melon crop yields high productivity and quality, making it easy to sell." After one year of growing Japanese pear melons and cantaloupes, combined with intercropping cucumbers and tomatoes, my family earned a profit of over 300 million VND after deducting expenses.

Determined to "not let the land rest," and given the current cold weather making it impossible to grow cantaloupes and honeydew melons, Mr. Doa's family is growing cucumbers instead. Mr. Doa shared: "Last year's cucumber crop brought my family a profit of about 70 million VND, and we hope to earn more this year. My family also hopes that the authorities will help and guide us in preparing the necessary documents so that the honeydew melons and Japanese cantaloupes we grow can be certified as VietGAP-certified products. This is a crucial condition for expanding our market and creating more jobs for local workers."

The integrated economic model of Chieng La commune is expanding. Currently, the commune has 31 villages, with 59 households earning 500 million VND or more. The flexibility, initiative, and creativity of Chieng La farmers have contributed significantly to reducing the poverty rate in the commune during the 2020-2025 period by an average of 5% per year. By the end of 2024, the poverty rate was reduced to 10.56%, and the near-poverty rate to 7.57%. From now until 2030, Chieng La commune strives to achieve an average per capita income of 56.94 million VND; reduce the poverty rate by 1.5-2% per year, and eliminate poverty according to the multidimensional poverty standard for the 2021-2025 period by 2030.

With the attention and support from all levels and sectors, and the collective efforts and determination of the people of all ethnic groups in the area, we believe that Chiềng La commune will achieve its set goals and the lives of its people will continue to develop.
