The Detroit Free Press reported on February 13th that a court in Detroit, Michigan, sentenced a Canadian truck driver to three years in prison for allegedly smuggling 10 Vietnamese immigrants from Canada into the United States.
Defendant Husain Al Kawwaz (35 years old) was also sentenced to one year of probation after serving his sentence, but he is not required to appear regularly.
The driver had previously pleaded guilty to smuggling foreigners into the country for profit. The minimum sentence for this offense is 36 months in prison.
The defendant's lawyer, Remond Atie, expressed gratitude to the federal prosecutors and the courts in the United States for considering all factors related to the case.
The incident occurred on August 7th when Husain, a Canadian of Iraqi descent, was going through immigration procedures at the Fort Street Cargo Handling Facility in Detroit at approximately 11:30 PM. The suspect drove a tractor-trailer to a checkpoint manned by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and appeared to be the only person in the vehicle.
Also at this parking lot, at approximately 0:30 on August 8th, security officers discovered 10 people hiding, later identified as Vietnamese citizens without US visas. Authorities later confirmed that these 10 people had previously gotten off the truck driven by Husain, and subsequently arrested the driver.
The driver claimed he received an offer from an unidentified person at a truck stop in Windsor, Canada, to transport them to the United States for a fee of $5,000.
According to prosecutors, Husain also smuggled other people into the US between April and August 2024, approximately 3-4 times per month, with 25-99 people per trip, for a fee of $500 per person.
