Strengthening intellectual property cooperation among ASEAN member countries

DNO - On April 22nd, in Da Nang, the Intellectual Property Office ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) organized the 72nd meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property Cooperation (AWGIPC 72) and a series of events lasting until April 26th.

Accordingly, AWGIPC 72 focused on implementing issues related to: the ASEAN Action Programme on Intellectual Property 2016-2025; and a number of cooperation activities on intellectual property between ASEAN and its partners.

On the sidelines of AWGIPC 72, events will include: the 15th meeting of the Sub-Committee on Intellectual Property of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA IPC 15); a ceremony to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day 2024 and the launch of the "Central Vietnam Students' Green Innovation" competition in Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province.

According to Director General of the Intellectual Property Office Luu Hoang Long, in recent years, ASEAN has strengthened cooperation on intellectual property among member states, as well as expanded cooperative relations with partners, with the expectation that ASEAN will become an innovative and competitive region in the world.

In this context, AWGIPC has been effectively playing a leading role in developing, coordinating, and implementing ASEAN action programs on intellectual property, aiming to achieve the intellectual property goals outlined in the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint.

Through this event, member states will continue to effectively implement the ASEAN Action Programme on Intellectual Property 2016-2025 and gradually build the ASEAN Action Programme on Intellectual Property for the post-2025 period.

At the conference, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee Tran Chi Cuong stated that the city government is very interested in implementing solutions for the development of intellectual property; it has issued many mechanisms and policies to promote intellectual property activities and develop intellectual property assets in the city, and has achieved positive results.

Specifically, the program for the development of intellectual property until 2030 was issued; policies on supporting the registration and protection of intellectual property in Da Nang city until 2030... including regulations on several policies to support businesses in technological innovation in Da Nang city, preferential investment policies for the development of supporting industries, and rewards for authors with inventions and useful solutions that have been granted protection certificates.

From 2022 to the present, the city has supported nearly 100 businesses in implementing innovation, improving technology, and developing products; assisted many organizations, individuals, and businesses in registering and establishing intellectual property rights; and supported the registration, protection, and development management of industrial property rights for 37 community trademarks in the form of collective trademarks and certification trademarks.

Currently, the city is developing a geographical indication for "Nam O" fish sauce with a total budget of 3.6 billion VND. According to data from the Intellectual Property Office, as of December 31, 2023, Da Nang had 4,202 granted certificates (trademarks, inventions, utility models, industrial designs), ranking 6th nationwide.
