It was a tumultuous day for Julian Alaphilippe of the Tudor Pro Cycling team, as he had an accident early in the race and dislocated his shoulder. Instead of waiting for medical assistance, the 33-year-old rider reset his shoulder himself.
Alaphilippe recounted, "When I dislocated my shoulder, I felt pain and wanted to wait for the medical staff to come and help. But I remembered what they had done at the hospital, and I tried to put my shoulder back into place."
After resuming the race, Alaphilippe maintained an excellent pace and remained in the leading group. Near the finish line, he attempted to overtake Slovenian rider Primoz Roglic to cross the finish line first, believing he had won the stage and celebrating enthusiastically. At that moment, Alaphilippe let go of the handlebars, punched the air, and shouted with joy.
However, he was soon given shocking news: two riders had already finished ahead of him: Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike). This meant Alaphilippe would only finish... third.
Speaking to the press about this embarrassing moment, Alaphilippe said: "Unfortunately, my radio stopped working after the crash. So I tried to sprint as fast as I could and I think I won the race. I raised my hands in celebration like an idiot. That's how it happened. I didn't even know who won."
After stage 15, the Tour de France will take a one-day break, and the riders will continue competing in stage 16 from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux, a route of 171.5km. Currently, Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar is leading the overall yellow jersey standings with a time of 54 hours 20 minutes and 44 seconds.
