Nearly 14 years have passed since the commencement of the Nui Beo underground mining project. Satisfied Officially reaching its designed capacity of 2 million tons of coal per year by the end of 2025 – a testament to a groundbreaking and highly effective decision by the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group. ( TKV ) in its sustainable development strategy .
Project The investment in constructing the Nui Beo underground mine, with a designed capacity of 2 million tons of coal per year, is the first key underground mining project designed by TKV (Vietnam Coal Corporation) and entrusted to Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company - Vinacomin as the investor, with a total investment of over 5,300 billion VND. The implementation of this project is extremely necessary given the dwindling open-pit coal production at Nui Beo, the need to maintain stable employment for thousands of miners, and to contribute to environmental protection in the local area where the company operates.

The project applies technology for opening the coal seam using a pair of vertical shafts, each with a diameter of 6 meters: the main vertical shaft is dug to a depth of -351m for transporting coal; the auxiliary vertical shaft is dug to a depth of -381m for transporting people, equipment, and materials. The project sets the criteria of "5 bests" including: highest safety, best management, best quality, highest progress, and best social security environment.
Because it was a large-scale project with modern technology, and the coal industry was undertaking the design and construction independently for the first time, many difficulties and challenges were inevitable. Therefore, Nui Beo Coal Company always learned from the experience of other units and experts both domestically and internationally, while also cooperating closely with contractors. In every decision, the company's leadership team carefully considered and calculated every detail.

The project commenced on the occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam (February 3, 1930 - February 3, 2012). Following the groundbreaking ceremony, the main contractor began construction of a crucial component of the project: a pair of vertical shafts at the +35 industrial level. With high determination, after three years, the company completed the final concrete pouring for the bottom of the auxiliary shafts, concluding the construction of the pair of shafts. In 2016, the company completed the excavation and connection of the central ventilation shaft and the central transport shaft. In 2017, the company put the first longwall face (41101) into operation and organized the extraction of the first ton of underground coal . In 2018, the company put the auxiliary vertical shaft hoisting system into operation . In 2019, the company applied tunnel boring machine technology combined with anchor support. In early 2020, the company used diesel locomotives combined with guide rails to transport oversized and overweight equipment, applied technology using combination machines to excavate coal mine tunnels to delineate working faces, and simultaneously put into operation 5 chain-supported working faces with a capacity of up to 200,000 tons/year, and 1 mechanized working face with a capacity of 600,000 tons/year.
In 2021, at the +17 level industrial site of the Coal Processing Plant, the Company completed a modern coal screening system covering an area of nearly 5,000 m² to meet the increasing demand for screening raw coal. On November 20, 2021, the Company celebrated its 1 millionth ton of underground coal per year. By the end of 2021, the Company completed the commissioning of the main vertical shaft hoisting equipment system, installing all equipment on the industrial site and inside the shaft pair, officially marking the completion of the basic construction process of the Project. This also marked the time when the Company completely ended open-pit coal mining, implementing the mine closure project and restoring the previously exploited production areas. Continuing its growth momentum, in the three years of 2022, 2023, and 2024, the Company extracted nearly 5 million tons of raw coal.

To ensure a sufficient workforce for the Project, the Company identified stabilizing production and gradually shifting open-pit mining workers to underground mining as a crucial task. Alongside explaining the benefits of this career change to the workers, the Company implemented preferential policies for retraining open-pit miners, allowing them to consider their options before deciding whether to stay or leave . This approach resulted in retraining hundreds of workers, significantly reducing the number of open-pit miners while substantially increasing the number of underground miners . Determined to ensure the quality and progress of the Project, Nui Beo focused on attracting highly skilled personnel through incentive policies and collaborated with the Vietnam Coal and Mineral College to recruit workers. Production was immediately arranged upon recruitment to ensure appropriate scale development in each phase. To date, the company has established 7 mining sites . Four mine excavation sites with nearly 2,000 miners.
Nearly 14 years after the project began, thanks to thorough preparation in terms of infrastructure and human resources, and the involvement of the entire political system, Nui Beo has produced tens of millions of tons of raw coal, generating tens of trillions of dong in revenue, contributing to national energy security, and stabilizing jobs and livelihoods for more than 3,000 workers.
As 2025 draws to a close, it marks a significant year in the development roadmap of Nui Beo Coal Company. The company has completed the investment and installation of an additional light-duty mechanized longwall mining system (model 40701) with a capacity of 350,000 tons of coal per year, and has also commenced the construction of a workers' dormitory project with a total investment of nearly 300 billion VND. Notably, by the end of December, the company had mined its 2 millionth ton of underground coal – officially reaching the mine's designed capacity.

It can be affirmed that the milestone of Nui Beo Coal Mine reaching its designed capacity of 2 million tons of underground coal per year is of special significance, marking a remarkable leap forward as the company became the first enterprise of TKV to successfully transition from open-pit to underground mining technology, initiating a period where underground mines were built using TKV's own resources. This has contributed to building a team of highly qualified and experienced cadres, engineers, and workers, ready to serve new key projects, creating a solid foundation for TKV to implement its sustainable development strategy in the future.
