After Queen Elizabeth II's cousin and closest confidante, Lady Elizabeth Anson, claimed that the late queen had concerns about the Duchess of Sussex's intentions, journalist and royal commentator Phil Dampier confirmed that Prince William had doubts about Meghan Markle joining the royal family.

Dampier told The Sun , referring to Anson's comments: "Sadly, it confirms what I've been saying or thinking for the past few years, which is that Meghan never really intended to stay in the royal family. She saw marrying Harry as a stepping stone to new wealth and fame. And that's what Prince William was initially worried about."
Dampier said the brothers "fell apart" over William's feelings for Markle.
However, a source has disputed the author's claims, telling Page Six : "Mr Dampier's opinions are purely subjective. They are completely without merit and without any basis in fact. There is no way that Mr Dampier, or anyone at The Sun , could know what the Duchess's intentions were or what she was doing."
The strained relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry
Prince Harry, 40, has had a strained relationship with William, 43, and their father, King Charles III, since the Duke of Sussex left the royal family in 2020 and moved to the United States.
Things got worse when Harry and the Suits actress , 43, accused the royal family of racism, and released a Netflix series about it.

Then, in January 2023, the Invictus Games founder released a shocking memoir , Spare , accusing William of assaulting him over Meghan Markle.
Harry said he was ready to "reconcile" with his family. "There have been a lot of disagreements and differences between me and some members of my family," Harry told BBC News on May 3, 2025.
"The current situation, which has lasted for five years and involves the lives and safety of my family, is the bottom line," the father of two said, referring to his losing appeal against the British government 's decision to strip Harry of his family of protection after he left the royal family. He admitted that "some members" of the family will never forgive him for many things.
"My father doesn't want to talk to me because of this security issue. But it's good to make peace with him," Prince Harry said.
Despite the disagreements and differences, Meghan Markle's husband said he "really wants to reconcile with the royal family" because "there is no reason to continue to 'fight'".
