Dong Ha city is a type II urban area from August 8, 2024.

On August 8, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 813/QD-TTg on recognizing Dong Ha city as a type II urban area.

Accordingly, from August 8, 2024, Dong Ha city is a type II urban area, directly under Quang Tri province (the scope includes the entire existing administrative boundary of Dong Ha city, comprising 9 wards, with a total natural area of 73.09 ^km2 ).

The Prime Minister assigned the Ministries of Construction and Interior; the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province and the heads of relevant agencies to be responsible for implementing Decision No. 813/QD-TTg.

Dong Ha City is the political , economic, cultural and social center of Quang Tri province, located at the intersection of National Highway 1A connecting Hanoi Capital - Ho Chi Minh City and the East-West trans-Asian road system connecting Thailand - Laos - Myanmar with countries in the region. Currently, Dong Ha City consists of 9 wards, a total area of 73.09 ^km2 , a population of 164,228 people, of which the permanent population is 102,478 people, the converted population is 61,750 people.

In December 2005, Dong Ha was recognized as a Type III urban area by the Ministry of Construction. In August 2009, the Government issued a Resolution recognizing Dong Ha as a city within a province.

With the advantage of being the commercial, service and industrial center of the province. In recent years, the infrastructure and technical facilities have been continuously invested and developed, making the urban face change rapidly. Dong Ha is also the place where the administrative agencies of the province, the units under the Central Government, the State-owned enterprises... The labor force is increasing in both scale and quality, the team of scientific and technical staff is constantly growing, which is a great driving force for the development of Dong Ha city.

Along with the rapid change in urban appearance, the cultural and social fields have many positive changes. Education and training have developed strongly in scale and quality, and people's knowledge has been increasingly improved. Cultural, informational, physical education and sports activities have developed widely and in depth. Social security and people's health care have received attention. National security and defense have been maintained, and social safety and order have been ensured.
