4 out of 6 Vietnamese universities have dropped in ranking.

The Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, published on June 22nd, show the rankings of universities in the Asian region for 2023.

Notably, this year's top 100 best universities in Asia continue to feature a Vietnamese representative, Ton Duc Thang University, at position 86, but it has dropped 13 places compared to last year.

This is the second time Ton Duc Thang University has been ranked among the top 100 universities in Asia since its appearance in the THE rankings in 2022.

Asian University Rankings 2023

Thus, in 2023, THE (UK) only recognized one Vietnamese university in the top 100 best universities in Asia.

Previously, Duy Tan University was among the top 100 universities in Asia in 2022, ranking 91st, but this year it dropped 15 places to 106th.

In addition, other Vietnamese universities also dropped in the THE ranking of universities in Asia.

Specifically, Hanoi National University dropped from the 251-300 group to the 301-350 group in 2022, and continued to fall to the 351-400 position in 2023. Ho Chi Minh City National University also dropped from the 401-500 group to the 501-600 group, ranking the same as Hanoi University of Technology.

Meanwhile, Hue University made its first appearance in the THE rankings, at position 601+.

Vietnam's representative scored highly in citation rate but low in research rate.

THE applies 13 key criteria in its ranking of Asian universities, similar to its world university rankings.

However, the weighting of these criteria in the overall ranking score has been adjusted to reflect the specific characteristics of Asia and its higher education institutions.

The 13 evaluation criteria used to rank Asian universities are categorized into five main groups, with proportions that differ somewhat from the rankings of the world's best universities.

Specifically, THE uses 13 criteria to rank Asian universities across five groups: teaching (25% of the total score, lower than the 30% in world university rankings), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (7.5%, higher than the 2.5% in world university rankings), and international outlook (7.5%).

Overall, the six Vietnamese representatives scored highly in citation rates, but received low scores in research scores. Specifically, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University were rated 100 and 99.2/100 respectively in terms of citations. However, these two universities had relatively low research scores, only 19.6 and 15.4.

In terms of teaching, most Vietnamese universities scored between 15.9 and 17.5 out of 100. Hanoi National University, however, stood out with 21.7 points. On the other hand, regarding income from the industry, Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranked first with 43.5 points. Meanwhile, Ton Duc Thang University led in the international outlook index with 58.4 points.

Ton Duc Thang University continues to be among the top 100 universities in Asia.

In 2023, THE ranked 669 universities from 31 countries and territories in Asia, including 79 new entrants. Besides Tsinghua University and Peking University, which continued to hold the top two positions for four consecutive years, China had two more representatives in the top 10. Following them were three universities from Hong Kong (China), while Singapore and Japan each had one. Japan also had the most representatives with 117 universities.

In April, THE also published its Impact Rankings, which assess the success of universities in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

In the Impact Rankings, Vietnam has 7 ranked institutions: Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (ranked 301-400); Duy Tan University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (tied 401-600); FPT University, Ton Duc Thang University (tied 601-800); Phenikaa University (801-1000); and Ho Chi Minh City Open University (1001+).

THE (UK) began ranking world universities in 2004 and is one of the four most prestigious and influential university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS (UK), US News & World Report (USA), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).
