More than 100 students and teachers at Phu Quy school, part of Binh Chau Primary School No. 2, Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province, are still teaching and learning in fear because the school could collapse at any time.
Ms. Bui Thi My Duyen - teacher at Phu Quy School (Binh Chau Primary School No. 2) said that most of the walls were peeling, and many of the walls had long cracks. On days when it rained heavily, water seeped into the room, so teachers and students had to move the desks to one side to avoid getting wet.
“On days of heavy rain and strong winds, we have to ask our superiors to let the students stay home from school to ensure their safety. With the prolonged storms like this, teachers and students here are very worried. We hope the government will soon invest in building a new school so that teaching and learning can be better, because teaching and learning like this is really worrying,” said Ms. Duyen.
On December 6, our observations at Phu Quy school showed that many walls of the classrooms were peeling and cracked, the corrugated iron roofs were rusty and rotten, and leaking. In addition, the purlin system and doors were damaged; along the corridors of the classrooms, many concrete pillars and gutters were cracked into large pieces, facing the risk of collapsing at any time, especially now that it is the rainy season, so students and teachers at this school are very worried.
Mr. Phan Van Cu - Principal of Binh Chau Primary School No. 2 said that Phu Quy School, built in 1996, has 5 classes, 121 students and 5 classrooms, of which 4 classrooms are seriously damaged and at risk of collapsing during the rainy season. It is worth mentioning that the degraded facilities affect the quality of teaching and learning, as well as the psychology of students and teachers. Parents whose children study at this school are also worried. Teachers and students here have to teach and study in an extremely dangerous environment. The teachers' insecurity also makes parents very worried, the main reason for the school's deterioration is because this project has been built for too long.
According to Mr. Cu, in addition to Phu Quy school, Dinh Tan school also has 4 classrooms that are severely degraded, affecting the learning of 72 students. At the main school with 335 students, there are also 8 functional rooms that are seriously degraded. To ensure safety, the school does not allow students to go to the library to read books at this time.
“We are facing many difficulties. The lack of facilities is greatly affecting the quality of teaching and learning. We hope that all levels will pay attention to investing in new construction to ensure safe and quality teaching and learning. With this situation, we are both worried about teaching and learning,” said Mr. Cu, adding that in the immediate future, to ensure the safety of teachers and students at this school, the school’s Board of Directors has a plan to arrange teaching locations elsewhere, and the District People’s Committee will allocate a budget to repair this school to ensure the safety of teachers and students in 2025.
Mr. Phung Ba Vuong - Chairman of Binh Chau Commune People's Committee said that the current state of deterioration and damage of classrooms at Binh Chau Primary School No. 2 is a concern for the locality, especially during the rainy and stormy season. The locality has requested the relevant agencies to pay attention, promptly repair and rebuild to ensure safety and meet the teaching and learning needs of teachers and students.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Dinh Hung Cuong - Head of the Departmentof Education and Training of Binh Son district said that, in the face of the current situation of Phu Quy school being degraded and in order to ensure safety and create better learning conditions for students. The unit has requested the People's Committee of Binh Son district to consider and agree on the policy and allocate funds to repair Phu Quy school.
