Before becoming a costume designer, Ms. Dang Thi Xuan was an artist in a traditional Vietnamese opera troupe. At that time, she was taken under the tutelage of People's Artist Dinh Bang Phi, who assigned her small roles. Later, she volunteered to take on additional "costume" duties, caring for the artists' costumes. "Ms. Xuan was very intelligent. Even for a small role, she could quickly memorize the lines and perform confidently. Later, when given the task of costume design, she remembered each play, which artist played which role, and what costumes and headdresses were needed. She was an invaluable costume secretary for the troupe. Sometimes, an artist would play multiple roles in one performance, requiring many costume changes. She remembered and calculated everything meticulously to avoid missing any scenes. Without her, the artists would be in disarray during each performance, especially in temple ceremonies where the backstage conditions were cramped, requiring meticulous and scientific costume arrangement," recalled People's Artist Dinh Bang Phi.

According to playwright Duc Hien, Dang Thi Xuan's life was very sad. She was orphaned at a young age, lived with the stage, and considered the traditional opera troupe her home. "When People's Artist Phung Ha built the artists' retirement home, she was one of those allowed to live there. She cared for the elderly artists, and later became involved in the performing arts and cultural exchange activities of the retirement home. She lived a gentle, amiable life, never offending anyone. Her passing leaves many elderly artists at the Thi Nghe Retirement Home deeply saddened," said playwright Duc Hien.

Artist Dang Thi Xuan passed away at 2:48 PM on October 22nd. Because she had no children, grandchildren, or relatives, she was cremated. Meritorious Artist Dieu Hien emotionally shared: "For many months, Ms. Xuan had been bedridden. About a month ago, she fell while using the restroom, and Hai, a security guard at the nursing home in District 8, came to take care of her. Today, she has left us forever."
Three weeks ago, People's Artist Kim Cương and artist Bích Lan (daughter of the late musician Bắc Sơn) visited the elderly artists at the Thị Nghè Nursing Home. The group visited Mrs. Đăng Thị Xuân, who was still lucid at the time and thanked her fellow artists for their concern. Currently, artist Ngọc Đáng is receiving treatment at the clinic and is experiencing periods of memory loss. The remaining elderly artists include: Mạc Can, Diệu Hiền, Ngọc Đáng, Lam Sơn, and Huỳnh Thanh Trà.
