Will candidates be able to choose subjects for university admission?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/11/2023

CANDIDATES CAN CHOOSE COMBINATIONS THAT ARE THEIR STRENGTHS

According to Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of the Training Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the current admission process based on subject combinations is not significantly affected by the 2018 General Education Program. Based on the method of constructing admission combinations over the years, universities develop various combinations depending on the specific characteristics of each training program. Each field of study has multiple admission combinations, allowing candidates to choose combinations that best suit their strengths to achieve the highest possible results in the admission process.

For example, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Master Quoc stated that the university's approach is to consider the average score of a combination of three subjects, either three independent subjects or two subjects including a main subject with a weighting factor of 2. This combination is applied to admission methods based on high school graduation exam results, specialized aptitude tests, and high school academic performance. However, the specific subjects in the combination need to be based on the actual data of the subjects students studied in the high school curriculum.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of the Training Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, also believes that the admission process should still be based on subject combinations to suit the specific characteristics of each training field. Regarding the aptitude test of the National University of Ho Chi Minh City, Dr. Nhan believes that adding more questions on new subjects from the 2018 General Education Program is necessary to increase opportunities for students. At the same time, allowing candidates to choose 3 out of 6 subjects for the problem-solving section is also consistent with the spirit of the new curriculum.

If a student is admitted to a university based on their chosen subjects and exam combinations, that's fine. But if the student hasn't studied those subjects in high school, how will the university organize supplementary training and knowledge acquisition?

Dr. To Van Phuong, Head of Training Department, Nha Trang University

"If the exam has separate scoring for each section, schools can proactively select candidates based on the results of the exams relevant to their chosen field. For example, fields requiring a foundation in natural sciences could consider candidates based on physics, chemistry, and biology. Fields requiring social science knowledge could consider candidates based on exams in history, geography, economics , and law," Dr. Nhan suggested.

SOME NEW SUBJECTS WILL BE ADDED TO THE ADMISSION EXAMINATION COMBINATIONS.

Sharing his thoughts on the planned changes to the university's admissions process in 2025, Master Nguyen Hua Duy Khang, Deputy Head of the Training Department at Can Tho University, said that the university will review the admission combinations and develop combinations that include new subjects from the 2018 General Education Program, based on criteria suitable for each major.

Master Khang believes that if students are properly guided to choose subjects that match their abilities and strengths from grade 10 onwards, it will be very beneficial for choosing a major when applying to universities. The issue is that universities will review and develop subject combinations that are suitable for students' subject and exam choices in the 2018 General Education Program.

"It's possible that in the academic transcript-based admission method, schools will add some new subjects from the new curriculum to certain subject combinations, suitable for the chosen major. For example, the subject combination for majors related to engineering and technology might include technology and computer science. Economics and law education could be included in the subject combination for majors in economics and law… However, if they do add more, schools should minimize the number of 'unusual' subject combinations that are not relevant to the major's specialization," shared Master Khang.

Similarly, Master Trinh Huu Chung, Vice Rector of Gia Dinh University, said that the university will also make some adjustments to the subject combinations for admission to align with the subjects of the 2018 General Education Program.

According to Dr. Nguyen Anh Vu, Head of Admissions and Brand Development at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking, the university plans to consider adjusting the subject combinations based on candidates' subject and exam choices to better suit their chosen majors and to create a pool of applicants. "At the same time, the university's separate entrance exam in 2025 may also change to align with the 2018 General Education Program," Dr. Vu shared.

CONTINUE SEARCHING FOR SUITABLE SOLUTIONS

Dr. To Van Phuong, Head of the Training Department at Nha Trang University, believes that the method of constructing appropriate admission combinations from 2025 onwards needs careful consideration. Dr. Phuong analyzed: "If students apply to the university based on subjects and exam subjects that match the chosen combination, that's fine. But if students haven't studied those subjects in high school, how will the university organize supplementary training and knowledge acquisition at the university level? Therefore, the university must establish a research group to develop suitable solutions."

Sharing this view, Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Business Relations Center at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that the university is currently carefully studying the subjects and curriculum of the 2018 General Education Program before deciding on the admission method. The university will conduct a school-level scientific research project on solutions to improve the quality of regular university admissions in the 2024-2030 period. The university plans to conduct surveys on 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students and high school teachers in southern provinces from Quang Ngai southward before deciding on the admission method for 2025.

Regarding the subject combinations for admission, Master Thai Son stated that in addition to the compulsory subjects (mathematics, literature, and foreign language), the school may give candidates the opportunity to choose subjects for admission. Specifically, students who choose natural science subjects will be considered for engineering and technology majors. Students who study social science subjects will be considered for law and tourism majors. Meanwhile, economics majors may consider both groups of students.

Students in Ho Chi Minh City have two ways to choose their elective subject combinations.

According to observations by Thanh Nien reporters, when implementing the 2018 General Education Program, depending on the actual conditions, high schools in Ho Chi Minh City organized for 10th-grade students to choose subject combinations using two methods: open or "combo".

Students are currently enrolled in the 2018 General Education Program, which includes elective subjects.

In schools with a highly open curriculum, students proactively choose a combination of 4 subjects from 9 elective subjects including geography, economics and law education, physics, chemistry, biology, technology, computer science, music, and fine arts.

For example, at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (District 5), Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District), Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City), etc., 10th-grade students are allowed to freely choose four subjects according to their interests, abilities, and career aspirations. Based on the students' subject choices, the school arranges a flexible timetable to meet their needs. In the morning, students attend traditional classes, and in the afternoon, they study with students from other classes in the same elective subjects they registered for.

However, most schools build some combination programs in the form of "combos" based on students' preferences and the actual availability of teachers.

For example, Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1) has developed 8 "combos," which are 8 subject combinations corresponding to the 4 exam blocks A, B, A1, and D for students to choose from. Le Quy Don High School (District 3) has also developed 15 combinations of subjects in the natural and social sciences for students to choose from. Similarly, Nguyen Huu Cau High School (Hoc Mon District) has 8 combinations with all 9 elective subjects included.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, Principal of Dao Son Tay High School, said that in top-tier schools, students tend to choose more science subjects. At the same time, according to Ms. Hao's analysis and predictions, with the draft of the 2025 high school graduation exam, which includes two elective subjects, when choosing four subjects from the curriculum, students will consider selecting two subjects for the graduation exam and university entrance exams, while choosing the remaining two less demanding subjects to reduce pressure.
