For the past two days, with the weather turning intensely sunny and temperatures rising, pineapple and carrot juice has been added to the daily menu of Mrs. Dinh Thi Hoa's family (Hung Dung ward, Vinh City). She buys these two fruits and vegetables and juices them slowly to serve her family of six.
“Three pineapples and two carrots are enough juice for six people for a day. Previously, pineapples cost only 7,000-8,000 VND each, but now they've increased to 15,000-17,000 VND each, and carrots have also risen from 15,000 VND/kg to 18,000 VND/kg. However, compared to buying them ready-made at beverage shops, it's much cheaper; it works out to only 10,000 VND per person per day,” Mrs. Hoa said.
Without a juicer readily available, many people choose to buy pineapples and carrots and then rent a juicer on the spot. The rental price for juicing ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 VND per kilogram of produce.
Ms. Hung Tam, the owner of a fruit stall at Hung Dung market, said: "For the past two days, people have been buying a lot of pineapples, carrots, or celery and carrots to make juice. On average, there are about 30-35 customers who hire us to juice them each day. The amount of pineapple sold has also increased sharply compared to before, even though the price is also rising daily."
Cooling fruits like coconuts, watermelons, and passion fruit have also seen price increases. Specifically, Siamese coconuts have risen from 12,000 VND/each to 17,000 VND/each; local green coconuts from 15,000 VND to 20,000 VND/each; watermelons from 7,000 VND/kg to 10,000 VND/kg; and passion fruit from 30,000 VND/kg to 37-40,000 VND/kg.
Not only are prices rising in local markets, but according to surveys, Nguyen Canh Chan and Dinh Cong Tru streets (Vinh wholesale market area, Hong Son ward) - which specialize in selling wholesale fruits, especially pineapples, sugarcane, and coconuts - are also very busy these days. Trucks carrying refreshing fruits from various places are arriving, along with motorbikes, rickshaws, and small trucks delivering goods to distributors, beverage shops, and retail stores.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ha, the owner of a sugarcane and coconut wholesale business on Nguyen Canh Chan Street (Vinh City), said: “Sugarcane and coconut prices from wholesalers are increasing daily. During the hot season, demand for refreshing drinks increases, and it's the peak tourist season, so every year, the prices of these items rise rapidly and for an extended period. However, compared to previous years, this year, the prices of coconuts and sugarcane have increased sharply right from the beginning of the season.”

Currently, the wholesale price of sugarcane is 5.5 million VND/ton (500,000 VND/ton higher than last year); the price of bundled sugarcane (long stalks) is 110,000-125,000 VND/bundle; and the price of purple sugarcane is 100,000 VND/bundle. Besides purchasing from sugarcane-growing localities within the province, dealers mainly import goods from Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh provinces.
“These past few days, traders buying sugarcane for processing have come directly to the farm to place deposits. The price of sugarcane is 500,000-700,000 VND/ton higher than last year. However, I haven't accepted any deposits yet because if the price of sugarcane has already increased at the beginning of the season, it's certain that the price of sugarcane for processing will increase even more sharply during the peak of the drought,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Men, a sugarcane farmer in Hamlet 4, Hoa Son (Anh Son).

Currently, pineapple prices in the growing regions of Quynh Luu, Yen Thanh, and Nghia Dan have increased compared to the beginning of the season. The current price of pineapples at the farm is 8,000-8,500 VND/kg, while honey pineapples can reach up to 17,000 VND/kg.
Especially tangerines from Phu Quoc, which were priced at only 5,000-7,000 VND/kg a week ago, have now doubled or even tripled in price due to increased demand. "Phu Quoc tangerines are perfect for juicing, with their refreshing sweetness, juicy segments, and affordable price."
Therefore, during the hot season, beverage shops and people alike choose to buy Phu Quoc tangerines to make drinks. Currently, the cheapest Phu Quoc tangerine is 12,000 VND/kg, while the best quality, selected ones cost 20,000 VND/kg. The price increase is due not only to increased demand but also because it's the end of the season, so the supply is starting to become scarce,” said Mr. Nguyen Tan Khoa, a Phu Quoc tangerine grower in Nghia Binh (Nghia Dan).

This year, the weather is predicted to be harsh, with prolonged heatwaves and high temperatures. Therefore, the demand for refreshing drinks will increase. With rising prices, farmers growing pineapples, watermelons, sugarcane, coconuts, etc., will have a good income, and the market is easier to sell their produce, so they are very happy.
