Anker - one of the most popular technology accessory brands today has suddenly announced a recall of more than 1 million PowerCore 10000 backup chargers (model A1263) due to "potential problems with lithium-ion batteries".

Anker's decision came after the company received 19 reports of fires, minor burns, and property damage totaling more than $60,700.

The recall applies to 1,158,000 power banks sold online through Amazon, eBay, and Newegg between June 2016 and December 2022. The affected batteries have the Anker logo engraved on one side and the model number A1263 printed on the bottom edge.

Although Anker only recalled products sold in the US, the PowerCore 10000 backup battery line is also quite popular in Vietnam through online and hand-carried sales channels.

Meanwhile, on June 16, Romoss - a technology accessory manufacturer headquartered in Shenzhen (China) also announced the recall of nearly half a million backup batteries due to the risk of fire and explosion. Notably, the recalled products are also sold in Vietnam.

The recall applies to 491,745 20,000 mAh power banks manufactured between June 2023 and July 2024.

The reason for this recall of Romoss power banks is because one of the company's products was involved in a fire on a Hong Kong Airlines flight from Hangzhou to Hong Kong (China) in March this year.

An investigation by the French Bureau of Investigation and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) confirmed that the fire in the luggage compartment was caused by a lithium-ion battery in the Romoss power bank. Passengers and crew used water to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

The recall of nearly 2 million power banks in a matter of days is a reminder that power banks can cause serious problems over time. Notably, the Anker and Romoss power banks mentioned above are both sold in Vietnam.
