On the afternoon of November 16th, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the opening ceremony of the 2023 academic year at the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
The opening ceremony of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City was first held in 2012, with the theme of innovation and integration of Vietnamese higher education . After more than 10 years of organization, the opening ceremony has become a traditional and meaningful activity of this training institution.
Before 600 outstanding students, the Prime Minister delivered a speech on the topic "Higher education and its role in creating momentum for rapid and sustainable national growth in the new era".

After more than 28 years of construction and development, from 3 core member universities in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and engineering and technology, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City has now become a center for undergraduate and postgraduate training, scientific research, and technology transfer in almost all important fields such as: engineering and technology, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, economics and law, health sciences, pedagogy, agriculture, etc. These fields are highly regarded by the scientific community both domestically and internationally.
Currently, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) is among the top 1,000 universities in the world (QS World). In 2023, QS announced the results of the 2024 world university rankings, placing VNU-HCM in the 951-1,000 group of the best universities in the world. Three criteria showed strong rankings and the university is leading in Vietnam: reputation with employers (ranked 366), graduate employment rate (ranked 386), and reputation among academic peers (ranked 524).
The Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) also leads the country in the number of internationally accredited programs. As of August 2023, VNU-HCM had a total of 126 programs that met international accreditation standards.
At the same time, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City is one of the leading institutions nationwide in scientific publications, especially in prestigious international journals listed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases.
Specifically, during the period 2017-2022, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City published 7,881 articles in international ISI/Scopus journals; in 2022 alone, the total number of international articles published in journals and conferences listed in the Scopus database reached over 2,300 – making it the institution with the highest number of international publications nationwide.
During this period, the entire Ho Chi Minh City National University implemented 6,373 science and technology service contracts with an average annual revenue of 216 billion VND.
During the period 2018-2022, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) trained and provided Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces with more than 60,000 bachelors, engineers, doctors, masters, and doctoral graduates. This is a workforce of intellectuals with good moral character and high professional qualifications, contributing to the construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the southern provinces in general.
Immediately after the 2023 opening ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his delegation worked with key officials of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
