Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with the Prime Minister of New Zealand on the occasion of attending the ASEAN Summit.

Both sides emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation in traditional areas such as trade, education, and agriculture, and expand into new areas such as climate change response, green economy , and digital economy.

According to the VNA special correspondent, on October 10, on the occasion of attending the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related summits in Vientiane, Laos, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his sincere gratitude to the Government and people of New Zealand for providing Vietnam with 1 million NZD to help overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also thanked the warm welcome and expressed satisfaction with the results of his official visit to New Zealand in March 2024.

The two Prime Ministers expressed their pleasure at witnessing the continued development and deepening of Vietnam-New Zealand relations; and agreed to coordinate the implementation of meaningful activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 5th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries in 2025.

Discussing future cooperation directions, both sides emphasized the need to further strengthen cooperation in traditional areas such as trade and investment, education and training, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges, and to expand into new areas such as climate change response, green economy, and digital economy.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that both sides set out specific roadmaps and steps to create further breakthroughs in order to bring bilateral trade turnover to US$2 billion by the end of 2024 and US$3 billion by 2026; he thanked and requested New Zealand to continue expanding official development assistance (ODA), and support English language and specialized training for central and local-level officials in Vietnam.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon agreed with the proposals of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; emphasized that Vietnam is New Zealand's leading partner in the region; affirmed that New Zealand will promote all areas of mutually beneficial cooperation, continue to support ODA in practical areas according to Vietnam's development needs, especially high-tech agriculture, disaster management and response, human resource development, etc.

The two Prime Ministers agreed to continue to coordinate closely in multilateral forums, and to make active and responsible contributions to addressing common regional and global issues.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized that the two countries share many common views on regional and international issues, which forms the basis for enhanced cooperation and contributes to building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean region.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh respectfully invited New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to visit Vietnam; Prime Minister Christopher Luxon happily accepted the invitation.
