“Happy” library spreads love of reading

Hoang Quang Khai was born in 1996. After graduating from high school, in 2015, he joined the army.
His days in the army trained Khai to have the habit of reading, so Khai cherished the idea of opening a free library for everyone. In 2017, Khai returned to his hometown and worked as a worker for a local company.

His intention to set up a library encountered difficulties because the worker's salary at that time was only about 7 million VND/month. However, with the determination to realize his dream, Khai spent a few million VND each month to buy books.

Children read books at Happiness library.

To collect many good books at reasonable prices, Khai went to Hanoi , found addresses and book fairs to buy discounted books.
After two years of saving and frugality, in 2019, the library with an area of nearly 20 square meters and nearly 1,000 books of all kinds was completed. Since the library was built, students in the village have had a place to read books - something that was very limited before. In June 2020, Khai quit his job at the company.

Currently, he is doing many jobs such as: Secretary of the Doan Khe village Youth Union, teaching yoga... so the free reading room is open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Talking to us, Mr. Hoang Quang Khai said: “I run a library and lend books for free so that many people in the village and commune have the opportunity to read books, thereby learning many good things from books and contributing to promoting reading culture, contributing to building the homeland. Recently, the District Cultural and Broadcasting Center in coordination with the Hung Yen Provincial Library has transferred more than 200 books of all kinds to my library, contributing to helping the library have new books, to better meet the needs of readers”.

Despite his busy life, Hoang Quang Khai is still very passionate about his project. He hopes to expand this free bookshelf to more regions and localities.
