Promoting the model of smart city adapting to climate change in Can Tho

On November 1, at Can Tho University, the Workshop "Solid waste management models for smart cities" was held, organized by the Union of Friendship Organizations of Can Tho City in collaboration with Can Tho University, the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Association of the city and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF/Germany).

This activity is part of the grant "Activities to promote smart urban areas to respond to climate change in Can Tho city in 2024" sponsored by FNF/Germany.

Speaking at the workshop, Ms. Le Thuy Ngoc Lan - Vice President of the Union of Friendship Organizations of Can Tho City - said that, realizing the values ​​and economic benefits of waste, in recent years, many localities across the country have implemented many models of classifying household waste at source, having solutions to reuse waste as raw materials for production, creating many recycled products from waste.

With the desire to seek and exchange measures to increase the economic value of waste resources through recycling and reuse, recovering energy from waste treatment, especially domestic solid waste, this workshop aims to introduce new approaches to applying digital technology in solid waste management; smart waste treatment methods in the world and the possibility of implementation in Vietnam; legal regulations related to the classification of domestic solid waste at source and management of domestic solid waste. The workshop also hopes to receive suggestions and recommendations from individuals and organizations on building policies for city development in the context of climate change in Can Tho.

Also according to Ms. Le Thuy Ngoc Lan, after the success of recent workshops related to the fields of climate change, sustainable development and smart cities, this workshop "Solid waste management models for smart cities" once again marks the good cooperation activities between the Union of Friendship Organizations of Can Tho City, Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF/Germany) and Can Tho University.

At the workshop, delegates focused on discussing topics on new approaches in applying digital technology in solid waste management; smart waste management methods in the world; survey of plastic components in solid waste - the case of Can Tho city; utilizing waste plastic in the production of environmentally friendly construction materials; anaerobic decomposition - a suitable technology for treating organic waste; application of remote sensing and GIS technology in urban environmental monitoring; community-based solid waste management...

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Chi Ngon - Vice Chairman of the University Council of Can Tho University, Chairman of the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Association of Can Tho City - said: From 2023 to now, Can Tho University has implemented many activities towards propaganda, trying to find solutions to promote the model of smart cities adapting to climate change. Organizing the Workshop "Solid waste management models for smart cities" is also part of the above efforts to raise sharing, suggestions, and recommendations to help local authorities have appropriate policies, helping to spread this spirit to the Mekong Delta.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Chi Ngon also said that on November 8, Can Tho University will coordinate with the Youth Union and the city's young intellectuals to continue organizing a workshop aimed at green startups related to smart urban development. "We hope that in this process, we can awaken one perspective or another from government leaders to scientists and people of the Mekong Delta," Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Chi Ngon added.
