First probiotic strain found to survive broad-spectrum antibiotics

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - This microorganism is capable of surviving sustainably in environments containing antibiotics without generating the risk of transmitting drug-resistant genes.

For the first time, a strain of probiotics has been discovered that is capable of surviving and thriving even when exposed to the antibiotic group Amoxicillin/Amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin).

This is the most commonly used broad-spectrum antibiotic today in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Specifically, according to research published in prestigious scientific journals ( Microorganisms – MDPI and PubMed Central ), scientists have successfully isolated the Bifidobacterium breve PRL2020 strain.

This is a beneficial bacterium capable of surviving, growing, and remaining stable even in an environment containing Amoxicillin/Amoxicillin-Clavulanate (Augmentin) antibiotics.

Notably, studies also confirm that this probiotic strain does not pose a risk of transmitting drug-resistant genes to other bacteria, which is an extremely important factor in ensuring biosafety when applied on a large scale.

Currently, the B. breve PRL2020 strain is being approached by several pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology firms for application in the development of next-generation probiotic products, especially live probiotics that can be used in conjunction with Amoxicillin/Amoxicillin-Clavulanate (Augmentin) antibiotics.

This is a breakthrough in the field of applied microbiology, promising to open new avenues for preventive medicine and digestive system care during antibiotic treatment.

In treating infections, antibiotics are a crucial and irreplaceable tool. However, in addition to killing disease-causing bacteria, antibiotics also severely damage the beneficial microorganisms in the body, especially in the gut. This is where up to 70% of immune cells are located.

This explains why patients, especially children, often experience diarrhea, digestive disorders, reduced immunity, and prolonged weakness after each course of antibiotics.

Although probiotics are often recommended for use alongside antibiotics, the reality is that most common probiotic strains are "inactivated" in antibiotic environments, rendering their protective effect almost negligible.
