(CLO) On January 10, the administration of outgoing President Joe Biden decided to extend the temporary protection program against deportation for approximately 900,000 immigrants from Ukraine, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Sudan.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program by 18 months. This not only helps these immigrants avoid deportation but also allows them to continue to receive work permits in the U.S.

Since taking office in 2021, President Biden has expanded the eligibility criteria for the TPS program. This program is for people from countries facing natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other particularly severe events. Currently, TPS protects more than 1 million people from 17 countries.
Conversely, during his term from 2017–2021, Donald Trump attempted to end most TPS programs but was blocked by US courts. Upon returning to the White House this January, Trump is expected to continue tightening immigration policy and seek to eliminate these protections.
While extending TPS is an important step, the Biden administration has yet to fully address demands from activists and some Democratic lawmakers to expand the program to new immigrants from other countries.
Todd Schulte, president of the immigration advocacy organization FWD.us, stated that extending TPS helps hundreds of thousands of people continue to "contribute to their communities, support their families, and strengthen their economies ." However, he also urged the Biden administration to expand TPS to Nicaraguan and other nationalities.
Currently, approximately 600,000 Venezuelans are protected under the TPS program, representing the largest number within this program.
The Biden administration first granted TPS to Venezuelans in 2021, citing political instability and economic crisis under President Nicolas Maduro, who was sworn in for his third term on January 10.
