Taiwan continues to receive US approval for military aid, just days after receiving 38 Abrams main battle tanks from the US.

President Biden speaks at an event in Washington DC on December 10.
AFP reported on December 21, citing a White House statement, that US President Joe Biden has approved $571.3 million in military aid to Taiwan, as he prepares to leave office before President Donald Trump's inauguration in January.
Accordingly, Biden approved the withdrawal of "up to $571.3 million in Department of Defense defense and service funds, as well as military education and training, to support Taiwan."
The White House statement did not provide details about the military aid package, which comes less than three months after a similar $567 million package was approved.
Earlier this week, Taiwan received 38 advanced Abrams tanks from the United States, reportedly its first new tanks in 30 years.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry thanked the United States on December 21 for its "steadfast security commitment to Taiwan."
"Taiwan and the U.S. will continue to cooperate closely on security issues to maintain peace , stability, and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait," the agency said in a statement, adding that it would not comment on the "contents" of the assistance "based on a tacit agreement between Taiwan and the U.S."
Beijing has repeatedly opposed international support for Taiwan and accused the U.S. of interfering in its internal affairs. Beijing has stated it will never abandon the possibility of using force to control Taiwan and has also intensified its claims that the "unification" of the island is "inevitable."
