According to Yonhap news agency, President Yoon Suk-yeol will not cooperate with any further questioning requests from investigators regarding allegations of rebellion and abuse of power following his declaration of martial law in early December 2024.
Yoon's lawyers said he would not appear for the questioning requested by the Office of Investigation of Corruption of Senior Officials (CIO), scheduled for the afternoon of January 16.
"Mr. Yoon is not in good health and has nothing further to say after yesterday's questioning," Yoon Kap-keun, one of Mr. Yoon's lawyers, told Yonhap news agency.
Mr. Yoon was arrested at his Seoul residence on the morning of January 15th and subsequently taken to the CIO headquarters. During two interrogation sessions that lasted until 9:40 PM that same day, Mr. Yoon exercised his right to remain silent.
CIO investigators planned to continue questioning Mr. Yoon at 2 p.m. on Thursday, skipping the morning session because lawyers said Mr. Yoon's health was not good.
However, the lawyers later stated that Mr. Yoon would also not be attending the afternoon hearing.
At the end of the first day of questioning, President Yoon Suk-yeol was taken back to Seoul Detention Center in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province.
On January 15, Mr. Yoon became the first sitting president of South Korea to be arrested for investigation into allegations of rebellion following his declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024.
After detaining Mr. Yoon, South Korean investigators have 48 hours to decide whether to file a separate formal arrest warrant application.
To detain Mr. Yoon for further questioning, the CIO will need to apply for another arrest warrant by the morning of January 17th, which is this Friday.
