On February 19, US President Donald Trump said he was considering giving 20% of the savings from the initiative of the Board of Government Performance (DOGE) and billionaire Elon Musk to the American people.
President Trump is considering handing out cash to citizens after completing the streamlining of the government and cutting spending in various departments.
The possibility of distributing cash to citizens was mentioned by President Trump at a meeting of global finance and technology leaders in Miami, Florida, according to AFP on February 20.
In addition, the White House occupant also stated that he is considering using another 20% to pay down the federal government's public debt.
"We are considering a new concept in which 20% of the savings from the DOGE initiative would go to American citizens, and another 20% would go towards paying off the national debt," Trump said.
The proposal initially came from an American businessman named James Fishback, shared on his account X (formerly Twitter). The post caught the attention of billionaire Elon Musk, who responded: "Will check this with the President."
According to Reuters on February 19, citing sources familiar with the matter, Mr. Fishback, CEO of investment firm Azoria Partners, is in contact with the Trump administration regarding the possibility of implementing the proposal in practice.
An American businessman has proposed dividing 20% of the savings from the DOGE initiative, which he estimates to be around $400 billion, into $5,000 checks to be distributed to each household in the US after the federal government streamlining is completed in July 2026.
Will the Trump-Musk duo cancel NASA's giant lunar rocket?
The above calculation stems from the scenario that DOGE could save $2 trillion, which billionaire Musk considers the best-case scenario, while the achievable target is $1 trillion.
The effort to cut government spending is also expected to save taxpayers $8.5 billion annually.
