President Donald Trump opposes a deal to sell Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. if it doesn't include the sale or transfer of CNN to a new company, which could jeopardize a proposal from Netflix Inc.
During a meeting with business leaders at the White House on December 10th, Trump emphasized that any deal must ensure that CNN is either part of the agreement or sold separately.
He argued that the people currently running the CNN company and network, whom he described as "a very dishonest group," did not deserve to continue their work. Trump insisted that CNN should be sold along with other assets.
Hollywood and Washington have been closely watching President Trump's comments about a potential deal with Netflix, in which the streaming service would take over Warner Bros. Studios and HBO Max, while cable channels, including CNN, would be spun off.
Paramount Skydance Corp. CEO David Ellison has put forward a competing offer that includes cable television networks.
The Wall Street Journal reported that David Ellison promised Trump sweeping changes at CNN (the news channel Trump had long complained about) if he gained control of the network's parent company. Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was also involved in setting up the financing for CEO Ellison's bid.
However, Trump has also met with Ted Sarandos, co-founder and CEO of Netflix, to discuss the deal. He has not yet publicly endorsed any of the proposals, though.
When asked about Kushner's involvement, Trump avoided answering, but said he might participate in the regulatory review process. He added that the final decision would depend on the circumstances and indicated that several good companies were bidding on the deal.
