On December 10th, Instagram announced a new AI-powered feature that allows users to view and adjust the algorithm shaping their Reels feeds.
Instagram calls this a pioneering step toward greater user control.
The app, owned by Meta, is introducing "Your Algorithm," accessible through an icon in the upper right corner of Reels—a user's video feed—showing topics that Instagram believes users will be interested in based on their viewing history.
In a blog post, Meta stated that users can now directly tell the platform which topics they want to see more or less of, with recommendations tailored accordingly in real time.
Social media platforms have faced increasing pressure from regulators and users to provide greater transparency regarding algorithmic content selection, which critics argue can promote harmful content or create "echo chambers"—where users only consume potentially misleading content and are repeatedly recommended content that reinforces those false or inaccurate viewpoints.
But companies also view algorithms as the "secret" of their platform for attracting users and often don't want to disclose them.
“Instagram has always been a place to delve deeper into your interests and connect with friends,” the company said in a blog post. “As your interests change over time, we want to give you more meaningful ways to control what you see.”
This feature shows users a summary of their top interests and allows them to input specific topics to refine their feed.
Instagram says it is “leading the way” in providing such transparency and control, with plans to expand this feature beyond Reels to Explore and other parts of the app.
The tool was launched in the US on December 10th and will soon be rolled out globally in English, the company said.
This move comes as Australia, for the first time in the world , bans people under 16 from using a range of popular social media apps, including Instagram.
The government said it aims to “take back control” from tech giants and protect children from “predatory algorithms.”
Earlier in August, a new feature on Instagram caused many users to worry about the risk of personal information leakage, after the social network owned by Meta added a "share location" option on a map similar to the Snapchat app.
Launched on August 6th, this feature allows users to share their location via Instagram's map, making it easier for friends to connect and share "interesting places." However, many people were surprised to find their location displayed without their knowledge.
