Starting from 2021, over the past 5 years, the city has made efforts to reshape inner-city tourism towards exploiting local identity, diversifying experiences and increasing regional connectivity.
Up to now, the program has achieved certain results. More than 60 tours in 22 districts and Thu Duc have been built and put into operation, contributing to positioning the brand of Ho Chi Minh City tourism destination in the domestic and international tourism market, promoting the growth of the number of tourists to the city.
Among them, many products attract a large number of tourists such as: "Memories of Saigon Special Forces"; "Go Vap - A Hundred Years of Finding the Past"; "District 5 - Memories of Saigon - Cho Lon"; Thu Duc with the tour "City by the River" to explore the landscape and architecture along the Saigon River; District 6 introduces the tour "Small Stories in Cho Lon" to explore Chinese culture; Nha Be district renews a land that seems little known with the tour "One Thousand and One Nights"...
The city also recorded 366 potential destinations that are being exploited, including natural resources, tangible and intangible cultural heritage and modern works.
These tours not only serve domestic and international tourists but also target the city's residents, helping them and tourists rediscover familiar lands through a new lens.

The program has created interest and raised social awareness of the role and significance of tourism in promoting socio-economic development in the area, helping localities identify the potential for tourism development in the area, creating motivation to promote social resources to invest in developing tourism products.
Responding to the press, Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Hieu, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, said that each district has its own unique values. Promoting existing potential to form tourism products is the right direction, not only diversifying the city's tourism products but also creating livelihoods for local people.
The program has also opened up a new approach to tourism in Ho Chi Minh City, placing cultural identity and depth at the center, instead of relying solely on traditional routes.
However, the program still has some problems that need to be overcome. Some destinations lack necessary facilities such as toilets, piers, parking lots or resting places. Some tours are poorly promoted, the staff is unprofessional and not properly trained...

A representative of the Department of Tourism said that in the near future, after Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau merge into Ho Chi Minh City, the new Ho Chi Minh City will have many more potential tourist destinations. This opens up opportunities for developing more diverse products and also places high demands on connection and coordination to avoid fragmentation, disjointedness, and duplicated products.
The Department of Tourism will focus on supporting localities to improve services, train human resources, invest in infrastructure as well as apply technology, such as digital maps, QR codes or destination introduction applications... The city also aims to link tours to increase the value of the experience for tourists.
Along with that, building thematic products associated with the identity and characteristics of the administrative unit such as Saigon night market, Gia Dinh cultural space, Ben Thanh street festival, tourist routes along the cultural - historical axis, experiential tourism according to "open heritage space"... In a large urban area like the new Ho Chi Minh City, tourism that wants to develop sustainably must follow the depth of identity, of story, of local attachment.
