A destination blending history and culture.
The Nuoc Oa base area in Tra Tan commune (Bac Tra My district) was a safe zone of Military Region V, a strategically important location for the Regional Party Committee and the Military Region V Command during the resistance war against the US. To preserve and promote the historical values of the Nuoc Oa historical site, on April 29, 2011, the Prime Minister approved the overall planning project for the Central Central Vietnam - Nuoc Oa revolutionary historical site, covering a total area of 700 hectares. Currently, the Central Central Vietnam - Nuoc Oa historical site complex has 11 historical sites, memorial areas, and commemorative monuments that have been or are being restored or newly constructed.
Of the 11 historical sites, 3 have been recognized as national-level historical sites, including: the Nuoc Oa historical and cultural base, the monument commemorating the Inspection Committee of the Zone V Party Committee, and the monument commemorating the Organization Committee of the Zone V Party Committee. The province has invested in the restoration and reconstruction of these sites, memorial areas, memorial plaques, and monuments, and the Bac Tra My district has undertaken similar efforts to preserve and educate the younger generation about the tradition of fighting against foreign invaders by the army and people of Zone V, promoting historical and cultural values while also serving tourism activities.
In the highlands of Bac Tra My, tourists can experience many festivals such as buffalo feasting, gong fighting, and the Ca Zim harvest festival… These are also some of the beautiful traditions of the Co people in the highlands of Bac Tra My after the annual rice harvest. The Ca Zim harvest festival, in particular, is a long-standing custom of the Co people, praying for favorable weather and hoping for a peaceful new harvest season, a tradition that has been passed down and preserved.
In Cao Son village, Tra Son commune, visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant sounds of drums and gongs and the dances of the Ca Dong people.
From their daily activities in labor and production, the Ca Dong people of Bac Tra My district have created many dances such as the Ca Bo dance, the Ra Nhoc dance, the drunken dance, etc., to serve the spiritual life of the people after hard days of labor and during village festivals.
Ms. Ho Thi Thom (Long Son village, Tra Son commune) said: “Coming to Cao Son village, tourists will have the opportunity to experience weaving traditional handicrafts, stringing colorful beaded necklaces, an indispensable piece of jewelry for Ca Dong women. We also make sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes, various types of cakes, pound rice… which will help people understand more about the local life and traditional culture.”
Experience community tourism
In Bac Tra My district, there is a destination this spring that caters to tourists from near and far: the miniature Muong village in Tra Giang commune. Nearly 40 years after settling in the mountainous district of Bac Tra My, 122 households of the Muong ethnic group, with over 440 people, live in Tra Giang commune. Most of them are Muong people who came from Lac Son district (Hoa Binh province).
The Muong people often play gongs during Independence Day (September 2nd), Lunar New Year, and other festivals and celebrations of their ethnic group. The sounds of the small gongs and the large gongs blend together to create a lively atmosphere. Muong girls also perform the traditional "sênh tiền" dance to celebrate the harvest season.
In addition, the Muong people in Tra Giang commune, Bac Tra My district, also organize folk games such as throwing the ball, bamboo pole dancing, and playing the "danh mang" game during festivals and holidays. The "danh mang" game demonstrates the skill and agility of the players and the perseverance of the Muong people in conquering the levels from easy to difficult, while also showcasing solidarity and community spirit.
The mountainous district of Bac Tra My also boasts numerous ecotourism destinations with incredibly diverse, rich, and attractive natural landscapes that visitors can explore during the spring season.
These include the Song Tranh 2 hydroelectric reservoir, Nuoc Vi waterfall (Tra Kot commune), Nam Tang waterfall (Tra Giang commune), Nuoc Oa waterfall (Tra Tan commune), Ba No waterfall (Tra Bui commune)..., and a system of natural rivers and streams with a pristine environment. Visitors can also leisurely stroll through peaceful sugarcane fields and admire the reflections on suspension bridges in the water.
According to Mr. Thai Hoang Vu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Tra My district, the district has organized many cultural festivals to restore, preserve, and introduce the beautiful cultural features of the locality to tourists.
The district also implemented the District Tourism Development Project for the period 2019-2025, with a vision to 2030, with many tourism promotion activities such as promoting Bac Tra My as a destination in the Vietnam tourism guidebook; developing and putting into use a Bac Tra My tourism "app"; publishing a Bac Tra My tourism handbook; and organizing famtrip tours to survey tourism...
To promote better tourism development, the district has implemented mechanisms and policies to attract and support the development of ecotourism and community-based tourism services; built tourism products that reflect the unique local culture; and created favorable conditions for organizations and individuals to boldly invest in and develop tourism. At the same time, the district also organizes training courses, professional development programs, and study tours to other localities and units on tourism development for officials and residents to improve their performance in the future.
