According to the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station, the peak tide on the Hau River measured at Can Tho station on the morning of November 6 was 2.35m, higher than the latest record of the previous high tide (2.33m on October 23) and the level of 2.27m in 2022.
The high tide hit a new record, causing many places that had never been flooded to be flooded.
Mr. Dung (Nam Long residential area, Cai Rang ward) said he has lived in this residential area for 14 years. During many high tides during this period, there was no flooding, but this morning many roads in the area were flooded quite deeply.
Vo Nguyen Giap Street, the main road running through Nam Long residential area and many other residential areas in the old Cai Rang district, was deeply flooded, making it very difficult for people to travel early in the morning.
Many roads in the central area of Can Tho city in Ninh Kieu ward were previously protected by a system of sewers and boat locks (part of the project to protect the core area of Can Tho city), so the recent high tides were not flooded, but this morning they were also flooded because the water from the river rose too high.
Specifically, Hoa Binh , Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Tran Quoc Toan, Ngo Quyen streets... were all flooded because water from the Can Tho River overflowed Ninh Kieu Wharf and the road along Ninh Kieu Wharf and continued to overflow. At around 6am, the tide receded, leaving behind tree branches, trash, and water hyacinth on the road surface.
Streets with a "tradition" of flooding such as Cach Mang Thang Tam, Bui Huu Nghia in Binh Thuy ward, Cach Mang Thang Tam (section in Cai Khe ward) have the deepest flooding ever, in some places the tide is up to the waist.
According to local people, fortunately the high tide peaked at dawn and then receded quite quickly, so it had little impact on people's lives and travel.
If in the coming days the peak tide continues to be high and falls during the morning rush hour, it will seriously affect people's lives and activities.
