Russia says it destroyed Ukrainian speedboats

Russia announced on August 22 that its air force had destroyed a US-made high-speed military boat near Snake Island in the Black Sea the same morning, according to RT. The boat was carrying a group of Ukrainian landing troops.

The Russian Defense Ministry later released video of the encounter, apparently filmed from a Russian fighter jet. The video shows the boat swerving back and forth as the plane fires rounds at it.

TASS news agency quoted a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry on the same day saying that a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet had shot down a Ukrainian unmanned reconnaissance boat near oil rigs in the Black Sea. Earlier, Ukraine announced that it had attacked a Russian air base housing Tu-22M3 supersonic bombers over the weekend.

CNN quoted a Ukrainian navy spokesman as denying Russia's claim about the incident near Snake Island. "There was no such incident in the Ukrainian navy. There were no casualties among the navy personnel," the spokesman said.

Snake Island was taken over by Russia shortly after hostilities broke out in February 2022. In June of that year, Russia announced its withdrawal from the island, calling it a gesture of goodwill for the Black Sea grain deal between the two sides. Meanwhile, Ukraine declared it a major military victory.

Also on August 22, Russia announced that it had prevented several attacks by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Moscow and surrounding areas. Ukraine has not commented.

Ukraine declares strategic progress

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar announced on August 22 that Ukrainian troops had entered the strategically important village of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia province) in the southeast. This is considered an important step in the ongoing counter-offensive, according to The Guardian .

Ms Maliar said Ukrainian soldiers were evacuating civilians but were still coming under fire from Russia. Russia has not commented.

Robotyne lies about 10 kilometers south of the town of Orikhiv, on a key route to Tokmak, a Russian-controlled road and rail hub. The capture of Tokmak is expected to be a milestone as Ukraine pushes south toward the Sea of Azov.

Ukraine’s counter-offensive since early June has been fraught with difficulties, leading some to believe that it will be difficult to successfully retake the southern city of Melitopol. However, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on August 22 that the US does not believe the conflict in Ukraine is at a stalemate.

"We've seen that this is a very fluid battlefield. Offense and defense are taking place on both sides at multiple points along a very wide front line. We're seeing them [Ukraine] continue to make systematic and orderly territorial gains," Sullivan said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Maliar also rejected suggestions that Ukraine was moving too slowly. She noted that Ukraine was attacking an enemy that had superior manpower and weapons. "It is not accurate to measure progress in meters or kilometers. The important thing is that we are still moving forward, although we have fewer people and fewer weapons," Reuters quoted Ms. Maliar as saying.

The Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister also said that she did not feel any pressure from the West to accelerate the operation. She said that this counteroffensive should not be compared with previous successes in Kharkiv and Kherson because each battlefield has its own characteristics.

Turkish Foreign Minister to visit Ukraine

Anadolu news agency on August 22 quoted a Turkish diplomatic source as saying that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit Ukraine on August 25, according to Reuters.

Turkish officials have repeatedly expressed interest in mediating between Russia and Ukraine to revive the Black Sea grain deal.

Russia has reportedly blockaded Ukrainian ports since the conflict broke out and threatened to treat all ships arriving in Ukraine as potential military targets after pulling out of a safe-clearance agreement for grain exports in the Black Sea in July.

The visit comes a week after Ukraine announced a "humanitarian corridor" in the Black Sea to free cargo ships stranded in its ports after a deal with Russia expired.
