The forum, held in Qingdao, Shandong province (China), was organized by the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat, an organization established under an agreement between Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo, according to Reuters. South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa spoke at the forum via video link.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Wang, currently the Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China, called on the three sides to "cultivate a sense of strategic autonomy, maintain regional unity and stability, resist the return of Cold War mentality, and escape the coercion of bullying and domination," according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry cited by Reuters.
Wang Yi is currently the Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China.
In its statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Wang also stated that "some major countries outside the region" have tried to replace unity with division while pursuing geographical interests. "If this trend is allowed to develop, it will not only seriously hinder the smooth progress of trilateral cooperation but also increase tensions and confrontation in the region," Wang said.
Wang's remarks come as the U.S. moves to strengthen closer ties with allies South Korea and Japan to counter China's growing influence in the region, according to Reuters.
Mr. Wang also emphasized the need to resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation, while opposing words or actions that could plunge the region into war. He called for accelerating negotiations on free trade zones and efforts to facilitate trade among the three neighboring countries.
However, Wang reiterated Beijing's opposition to Tokyo's plan to discharge treated wastewater from Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea, saying it would affect the marine ecosystem and people's safety, according to Reuters.
