After many years of use, especially after the recent storm, the sidewalks of many streets in Hanoi have seriously degraded, the paving stones are broken, sinkholes have appeared, posing a danger to pedestrians.

In 2019, Hanoi issued a model design for urban sidewalks. Since then, districts, towns, and (old) cities have proposed paving nearly 300 streets, and have completed more than 250 streets, mainly in the inner city. Other areas are mainly paved with block bricks or imitation stone bricks. After a period of use, many sidewalks have sunk, cracked, and broken.
