Vietnam always values its relationship with Paraguay, an important partner in Latin America and a member state of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), affirmed Ngo Minh Nguyet, Vietnam's Ambassador to Argentina, concurrently accredited to Paraguay and Uruguay.
In an interview with VNA reporters in South America, before a working trip to attend the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Paraguay (1995-2025), which will take place in Asuncion on December 11, Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet emphasized that Paraguay and Vietnam have many similarities in the process of fighting for independence, defending the country and developing socio-economy, and highly appreciated the positive developments in the friendly relations between the two countries over the past three decades.
Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet highlighted the support of the Paraguayan people in Vietnam's struggle for national independence and development, and affirmed that the recent meeting between President Luong Cuong and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña within the framework of the High-level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly in New York was a testament to the solidarity, friendship and good cooperation between the two countries.
Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet also stated that Paraguay is one of Vietnam's top 10 trading partners in Latin America. In 2024, bilateral trade reached over $233 million, an increase of 22.2% compared to 2023, with exports reaching $115 million and imports $118 million.
In the first 10 months of this year, this figure reached nearly $146 million. Vietnam's main exports to Paraguay include telephones, footwear, textiles, car tires, and electronics, while imports include soybeans, meat meal, cotton, frozen beef, and corn.
Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet expressed Paraguay's support for the early start of negotiations on a free trade agreement between Mercosur and Vietnam, as well as the hope that Vietnam will open its agricultural market and cooperate in the processing, agricultural and textile industries.
The potential for economic, trade and investment cooperation between Paraguay and Vietnam is still huge. The two sides need to further promote exchanges to create a breakthrough in the cooperative relationship in the coming period.
Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet suggested that both sides need to cooperate closely to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges, while also strengthening coordination and mutual support in multilateral forums.
Paraguay is a country with a rapid and above-average economic growth rate in Latin America, thanks to its macroeconomic stability. According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), the South American nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is projected to reach 4.3% in 2024, among the highest in the region.
