Previously, smoking was still prevalent in some public areas, around the entrance of Tien Dien Medical Center (formerly Nghi Xuan Hospital, Nghi Xuan District Medical Center), and even in the examination room corridors. This not only affected the working environment of medical staff but also harmed the health of patients.

Faced with this situation, the leadership of Tien Dien Medical Center has identified the creation of a smoke-free working environment as a key task and an important measure to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment.

Dr. Le Viet Hung, Director of Tien Dien Medical Center, stated: “We have issued internal regulations clearly stating that staff are not allowed to smoke at the workplace. This is considered one of the criteria for evaluating and ranking annual performance. At the same time, the staff of the unit are responsible for monitoring and reminding patients and their families to comply with the no-smoking rule within the center's premises, explaining to smokers the relevant regulations and the harmful effects of tobacco on health.”

Posters warning about the harmful effects of tobacco are displayed in easily visible locations.

To effectively carry out communication activities on preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco, Tien Dien Medical Center regularly organizes training sessions for all staff. Communication content is integrated into regular meetings, professional development sessions, and periodic announcements. The center also strengthens visual communication activities such as: displaying "No Smoking" signs in all departments and wards, posting posters warning about the harmful effects of tobacco in easily visible locations, etc. These activities help raise awareness among people visiting the center for medical examinations and treatment, creating consensus in complying with regulations.

Notably, the Tien Dien Health Center goes beyond simply "banning smoking" and actively assists patients in quitting. Through health check-ups, examinations, and consultations, doctors incorporate information about the harmful effects of tobacco on lung and cardiovascular diseases, and provide guidance on quitting smoking. Thanks to this approach, many people have reduced or quit smoking.

Patient PVD (56 years old, Nghi Xuan commune) said: "I've been smoking since my youth, and now I occasionally experience coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. During my treatment at Tien Dien Medical Center, the doctors and nurses advised and educated me about the harmful effects of smoking, so this time, I will try to quit smoking to maintain my health."

After a period of intensive implementation, the working environment at Tien Dien Medical Center has become cleaner and more professional. The departments and wards are clean, free of cigarette smoke, creating a comfortable space for both medical staff and patients. People visiting for examinations and treatment are very satisfied and feel more secure during the treatment process.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Giang – Secretary of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Program at Tien Dien Medical Center, said: “In the coming time, we will continue to strengthen communication efforts, especially expanding communication activities to the local community through social media such as Zalo, Facebook, and the hospital website… to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco. At the same time, we will strengthen inspection and supervision of the implementation of regulations under the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention, and effectively build a “smoke-free workplace” to maintain a healthy environment for patients and create a civilized workplace.”
