Construction of the villa began on September 21, 1911 with 13 large rooms and many auxiliary facilities such as a generator in the basement and a water tank that can be used all year round. The name Lau Ong Hoang comes from the locals' popular way of referring to the luxury of the French duke who lived here. Photo: MXH.

Because this was an important military strategic position that could observe and control a large area, during the resistance war against France, Lau Ong Hoang was demolished to prevent this place from falling into enemy hands.

On June 14, 1947, Hoang Hoa Tham Company, 82nd Regiment of Binh Thuan completely destroyed the Lau Ong Hoang stronghold. This is considered a typical battle of Binh Thuan armed forces in the resistance war against French colonialism.

Mr. Phan Anh (residing in Phu Hai ward, Phan Thiet city) said: "In recent years, this relic has been known by many domestic and foreign tourists. However, recently, some local people with poor awareness have come here to eat and litter in a very messy way. This also contributes to making the experience of tourists here worse."

Today, most of the structure has been lost. Many visitors have mistaken it for a military bunker with many loopholes riddled with bullet holes.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Thuan province has prepared a proposal report to the Department of Planning and Investment of the province for consideration and approval of investment in rebuilding the Lau Ong Hoang Cultural Tourism site. The total estimated investment of the project is nearly 10 billion VND, which is included in the project investment plan with a project implementation period of 3 years, from 2021 to 2023. By the end of 2024, the above investment plan is only on paper and there are no signs of maintenance or repair.
