Accepting the ban from the World Carom Billiards Federation.
On November 26th, Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi announced that she would be switching to play for the PBA in South Korea. This also means that the female player born in 1999 is no longer a member of the VBSF. It is known that the VBSF is a member of the World Carom Billiards Federation (UMB), while the PBA was established later and is considered an opposing organization to the UMB.
Yen Nhi also stated that she accepts the penalty from UMB for deciding to compete in the PBA. The player from Da Nang will not be allowed to participate in tournaments under the UMB system, or organized by UMB members (for example, the Vietnam National Championship).
Yen Nhi is the number one player in Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards.
Speaking to Thanh Nien newspaper , Yen Nhi revealed that she will fly to South Korea on November 28th and begin competing on December 1st. "From now until the end of 2024, there are only two tournaments left. For now, I will test my skills in these two tournaments. Currently, I have only signed a contract to participate in the PBA, not a formal fixed-term contract with the PBA. I will assess the suitability of the PBA environment for myself, as well as other factors… before making my next decision," the 25-year-old female player said.
Yen Nhi is the second Vietnamese female billiards player to appear in a South Korean tournament, after Nguyen Le Lien Quynh (who did not compete successfully). As for Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards in general, many male players have proven themselves in the PBA, such as Ma Minh Cam, Ngo Dinh Nai, Nguyen Quoc Nguyen, and Nguyen Huynh Phuong Linh.
More opportunities for interaction.
In South Korea, Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi will have more opportunities to compete. The female billiards player from Da Nang will compete in the LPBA (part of the PBA, with many tournaments specifically for women), which features many of the world's strongest female players. This is also the biggest reason why Yen Nhi chose to compete in South Korea. The female player born in 1999 expressed: "In Vietnam, there are too few 3-cushion carom billiards tournaments for women. And in the UMB system, there will be no tournaments for women in 2025. The Women's World Championship has changed, now held every two years. I think that if I stay at UMB, I won't have any opportunities to gain experience in 2025."
Yen Nhi is the first Vietnamese billiards player to win a medal at the Women's World Championship.
"In my opinion, both the UMB and PBA players are very strong. However, the PBA has more tournaments, so players have more opportunities to compete. In the PBA, there are 9 to 10 tournaments for women in a year. Therefore, if you lose in one tournament, you still have a chance in the next, which reduces the pressure. Besides, with tournaments held continuously, I will have more opportunities to gain experience, learn many things, and accumulate competitive experience," Yen Nhi added.
The format of the tournament is the distinguishing feature between UMB and PBA. In UMB, players compete in a single long match to determine the winner. In PBA, the match consists of multiple frames, each frame usually played to 11 points (for women). Regarding the tournament format, Yen Nhi commented: "The PBA's format is completely different from UMB. Being ahead or behind in a match doesn't mean anything, as just one turn is enough to turn the situation around. With such a format, the possibility of surprises is very high, and underdog players like me will have more opportunities."
