1,670 billion VND to 'keep' tourists in Hoi An longer

On March 15th, the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Office announced that the Provincial People's Committee had sent a document to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requesting consideration and approval by the Prime Minister of the Project for the Preservation and Promotion of the Value of the Hoi An Ancient Town World Cultural Heritage Site until 2030, with a vision to 2035. The total estimated cost for the project is 1,670 billion VND.

The project sets specific targets for 2030, including: 100% of degraded classified historical sites being restored and renovated; 100% of valuable intangible cultural heritage and documentary heritage being managed with scientific records and preserved and promoted; and 100% of classified historical sites included in the protection list having management, protection, and value promotion plans…

At times, Hoi An Old Town was overwhelmed due to the excessive number of tourists.

The overall goal by 2030 is to build and develop Hoi An City to meet the basic criteria of a type 2 urban area and a national tourist city, possessing distinctive ecological, cultural heritage, landscape, and environmental characteristics, while being modern and having its own identity, with Hoi An Ancient Town and the Cu Lao Cham World Biosphere Reserve as its core.

Mr. Le Tri Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province, said that Hoi An is a very special heritage city, being both an administrative city and a "living heritage" city.

In recent times, the fact that heads of state, billionaires, and tourists from around the world often visit Hoi An when coming to Da Nang shows a developing tourism link between localities in the region, especially between Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam.

Mr. Le Tri Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province, spoke about "keeping" tourists staying longer in Hoi An.

Heritage tourism is a strength of the region, so when tourists visit Da Nang, they often choose to go to Thua Thien-Hue and Hoi An. However, Hoi An has not yet created new products to "keep" tourists staying longer. Furthermore, it has not developed its surrounding areas to create more space for growth and extend the length of stay for tourists.

"Currently, the province is directing the development of tourism plans in areas adjacent to Hoi An City. Hoi An will be the 'nucleus,' and from there, the focus will be on attracting more tourists, ensuring higher spending, and especially creating a more memorable experience for visitors to Quang Nam," Mr. Thanh said.
