Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên30/08/2023

Phu Tho General Hospital said today, August 30, that doctors had just admitted a mother and her three children with the same symptoms of poisoning: vomiting, stomachache, diarrhea, and fever.

According to information from the patient's family, at home, seeing many wild mushrooms growing in the garden that looked like straw mushrooms, thinking they were edible, Ms. NTN picked them, stir-fried them and ate them with her 2 children (an 11-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl). About 4 hours after eating, all 3 of them showed symptoms of poisoning.

Mushrooms that grow spontaneously in the shape of straw mushrooms cause poisoning

At the hospital, all three mother and children were diagnosed with food poisoning and monitored for electrolyte disturbances. After 1 day of intensive treatment with IV fluids, antibiotics, and electrolyte replacement, the patient's vomiting and dehydration improved, her health improved, and she was discharged after 2 days of treatment.

Doctor Nguyen Duc Long, Head of the Emergency Department (Phu Tho General Hospital), assessed the above case as quite fortunate because the victims were all taken to the hospital soon after the symptoms of poisoning appeared, and were examined and treated promptly.

According to Dr. Long, it is currently the rainy season, mushrooms grow strongly so many people pick them for cooking. To distinguish poisonous mushrooms, people often rely on the color, smell and shape of the mushrooms. Usually, poisonous mushrooms are colorful, with white, black or red spots on the mushroom cap. If the mushroom smells fragrant and when picked, the resin flows out, then it is a poisonous mushroom and should not be eaten.

Mushrooms with swollen, bulb-like bases are mostly poisonous.

However, in reality, some poisonous mushrooms have the same color and shape as common mushrooms, so it is easy to confuse them. Therefore, people need to recognize and distinguish between mushrooms; if the origin is unknown, and if you do not know whether the mushroom is poisonous or not, it is best not to eat it.

Doctors recommend that in case you have eaten mushrooms and experience symptoms of poisoning such as hangover, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, you should quickly induce vomiting as soon as possible to expel the toxins, and drink plenty of water, preferably oral rehydration solution (ORS); you should quickly go to the nearest medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
