The 2024 IJSO took place in Romania with 303 students aged 15 and under competing in natural science events including physics, chemistry, and biology.

For each subject, students must take 3 exams including: an objective test on general knowledge; a theoretical exam requiring skills in synthesis, analysis, autonomy, problem solving, calculation, science, and creativity; and a practical exam requiring skills in using modern tools and machinery.

Each exam requires candidates to have not only knowledge but also the ability to communicate, cooperate, share and solve problems. The IJSO exam is considered difficult and heavy, managed by the IJSO World Academic Committee, with the characteristics of basic and academic education of the European bloc.

Vietnam has participated in this exam since 2007. Every year, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) authorizes the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to send candidates to take the exam.
