Princess Nguyen Phuc Nhu Mai (1905-1999) was the first Vietnamese woman to graduate with a master’s degree abroad. In the book “The Royal Consorts, Princesses, and Palace Ladies of the Nguyen Dynasty”, author Ton That Binh wrote that Princess Nhu Mai was sent to Paris to study, entered the University of Agriculture and Forestry, and ranked fifth. Throughout her studies, the princess was an excellent student.
She graduated with a master's degree and then continued her studies, earning a degree in Chemistry. She worked at the French Institute of Agricultural Research, then in the Dordogne and Correze provinces. In her mother's Correze province, the princess used what she learned to support the poor with farming techniques and was highly respected.

Princess Nguyen Phuc Nhu Mai was not the first female doctor of Western studies in Vietnam. That person was Mrs. Hoang Thi Nga, the first principal of the University of Science (also known as the College of Science) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, in late 1945.
Ms. Nga successfully defended her doctoral thesis in Physics entitled "Photoelectric properties of organic substances" in 1935, becoming the first woman in Vietnam to receive a doctorate in France.

Princess Nhu Mai was the daughter of King Ham Nghi - the eighth king of the Nguyen Dynasty, the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam.
At the end of 1888, when the Can Vuong movement was at its height, King Ham Nghi was captured by the French. In 1889, King Ham Nghi was taken by the French colonialists to Algiers (capital of Algeria) and imprisoned in the village of El Biar. In 1904, King Ham Nghi married Mrs. Laloe, daughter of the chief justice of the Algiers court, and had three children.

Princess Nhu Mai is an open-minded, energetic and good-natured person. Princess Nhu Ly graduated with a doctorate in medicine and married Duke François Barthomivat de la Besse. Meanwhile, Prince Minh Duc was an officer in the French army.
