Princess Nguyen Phuc Nhu Mai was not the first female doctor of Western education in Vietnam. That person was Ms. Hoang Thi Nga, the first principal of the University of Science (also known as the College of Science) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, in late 1945.
Ms. Nga successfully defended her doctoral thesis in Physics entitled "Photoelectric Properties of Organic Substances" in 1935, becoming the first woman in Vietnam to earn a doctorate in France.
