Reuters news agency reported on December 3 that police in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura had just arrested seven members of a Hindu group and prosecuted them for storming the Bangladesh Consulate and destroying property.

The move came hours after Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country, called for immediate action against protesters who stormed the consulate. Bangladesh said vandals broke down the main door, damaged property and desecrated the Bangladeshi flag.

Those arrested were part of a protest organized by the Hindu Sangharsha Samiti, a group claiming to protect Hindu rights, after Bangladesh last week arrested a Hindu religious leader, Chinmoy Krishna Das.

"About 50 of them broke the main gate and pulled down the Bangladesh flagpole," said Tripura police officer Kiran Kumar K.

The protest group numbered about 4,000 people. In addition to the seven arrested, there were others and police are investigating, in addition to four police officers in charge of security at the consulate who have been disciplined, he said.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on December 2 expressing deep regret and saying that diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances.

Mr. Das was arrested on November 25 at Dhaka airport in Bangladesh on sedition and other charges. The arrest sparked protests in Dhaka and the southern city of Chittagong, where his supporters clashed with security forces.

India has condemned the arrest and expressed concern over attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
