In addition to curbing illegal migration, the agreement will also include joint police operations between the two countries against human trafficking rings and the trafficking of materials used to build boats.

The issue of illegal immigration is currently at the heart of the political agenda in Britain, ahead of the upcoming election, due in 2024.

Accordingly, London affirmed that it will support the construction of a new police center in Ankara, based on the cooperation between the two countries on law enforcement.

On the same day, the British government said that under a new memorandum of understanding with Turkey, the exchange of customs data between the two sides will take place more quickly.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: “Our partnership with Türkiye – a close friend and ally – will enable our law enforcement agencies to work together to tackle this international issue and tackle the smuggling of migrants in small boats.”

Earlier, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged to reduce the number of illegal migrants coming to the UK in 2023, as he tries to narrow the gap with the opposition Labour Party, which is leading in opinion polls.
