Apple has just announced an important change in its artificial intelligence (AI) division when AI Director John Giannandrea will leave the company, making way for Amar Subramanya, a veteran AI expert who worked for 16 years at Google. This is considered a strategic move by Apple to accelerate AI improvements on the iPhone, especially the virtual assistant Siri.
Apple Intelligence – Apple’s AI platform – has long been considered lagging behind rivals like Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy. The AI capabilities on the iPhone are not really useful and have not reached their full potential. Today, Apple announced that Giannandrea, who has led the AI department since 2018, will leave the company next spring, continuing as an advisor during the transition period. He will be replaced by Amar Subramanya – who was Head of Engineering for Gemini Assistant at Google and has experience working at Microsoft and DeepMind.

Apple values Subramanya’s experience and expertise in AI and Machine Learning (ML) research, as well as his ability to apply this research to real-world products. He will become Apple’s Vice President of AI, reporting directly to Chief Software Officer Craig Federighi, who is currently a key player in Apple’s AI initiatives.

Siri will become smarter with iOS 26.4
One of the things that has held Apple back is Siri. While Siri now has the ability to ask users about using ChatGPT to answer some questions, the feature is limited compared to other AI assistants. Apple is expected to introduce new AI improvements to Siri in the iOS 26.4 update next spring.
With the new Siri, the virtual assistant will be able to understand the context of what is displayed on the screen. For example, if you are looking at a photo on your iPhone, you can say: “Send this photo to my brother” and Siri will do it. Siri will also be able to access emails, messages, photos, calendars to provide details about restaurants, reservation times, guest lists, and perform complex multi-step actions like taking an edited photo and attaching it to an email. The new assistant will be powered by a large language model (LLM) with technology from Google’s Gemini AI.
Apple recommends that users who want to experience the new Siri can join the iOS Beta program and install iOS 26.4 Beta when it is released.

AI personnel changes at Apple
At Apple, Giannandrea reports directly to CEO Tim Cook, while Subramanya reports to Craig Federighi. Tim Cook praised Giannandrea's role in building the AI foundation and said: "We are grateful for John's role in developing AI, helping Apple continue to innovate and enrich the lives of our users. AI has long been at the heart of Apple's strategy, and we are excited to welcome Amar to our leadership team, bringing his exceptional AI expertise."
The Apple CEO also highlighted Craig Federighi's important role in driving the company's AI efforts, including overseeing the development of Siri to become more personalized for users in the coming year.
Amar Subramanya's joining promises to be a major turning point for Apple in the AI race, helping Siri and AI features on the iPhone break away from competitors, while improving user experience in the near future.
